I am planning on building an early Dutch fowler and need a long smoothbore barrel. The longer the better but 20 ga and 46" is the minimum. Don't really want to wait half a year so if anyone has one in the shop and no immediate plans, let me know. Octagon to round preferred but would consider round also.

Long barrels 46" and longer generally go from $250 on up. If someone orders a bunch of them, for a line of semi-custom guns, it can be cheaper per item. Funny- I'm trying to build a fairly plain gun and the parts will run me about $600 and I'll be building the lock myself from castings and nothing pre-carved. That's just what it costs, not complaining a bit.

Rich, another obstical is getting a longer ramrod. It's hard to find hickory in 60 inch lengths. I ran into a guy in Kzoo last weekend, that was buying every longer length rod he could find, for his dutch fowlers. He had two with 56 inch barrels. He found three rods, and was guarding them like they were made of gold. Bill

I'm pretty sure I'll be splitting my own hickory ramrods for this project!

Rich, I may be a little late, but I should have a batch of 20ga. OTR 46" long barrels coming from Long Hammock tomorrow. I have 24 and 28ga ones on the shelf already. He might also be able to make you one longer, just give him a buzz.

A budy of mine, he and I have often discussed the possibility of using seamless tubing as a smothbore barrel. Get a chunk of a certain size diameter to accomodate the breach and then put it in a lathe and turn it down so that it tapers towards the muzzle.

What are your thoughts?

I know that is done but I don't have the facilities nor the confidence to do it. The gun will probably be for sale and I don't want that kind of responsibility (making barrels when I don't know what in the world i am doing). I also feel the sale (consignment) will go better if I can name the barrel maker.

Check with Don Getz Barrel Company. They advertise smooth bores up to 50".

Thanks, know Getz barrels and love the work John does (Don is retired). Most of the high end, custom barrel makers are backed up. I've already had an order in to Getz for another project for 6 months. That's why I was askin if anyone had one in the closet! I've got a line on 2 different barrels "in stock" and need to decide and pull the tricker!
