Skychief: The Chunk Gun Shoots follow a traditional format. you shoot for score at 10 targets, one shot each. The Target has a Cross on it, and the shot closest to the center of that cross wins that " relay". The Total of the distances from the center of your ball hole in the target, to the center of that cross, for the 10 shots becomes your total "String" for the match, and the winner is the guy with the shortest "string".
Shots are fired at 60 yards, prone, shooting over a " chunk". This used to be a log, but the rules now allow shooters to bring their own wooden rests, with restrictions as to its construction.
At most matches, you are allowed about 3 "test" shots to zero your gun for the range conditions. You are permitted to use a " Spotter" stapled or glued to the actual target, to focus your front sight on so that the wind, and variations in height of any given load can be put on that cross, when everything is done right. Shaders over both the front and Rear Sights are allowed. Scopes, and Tube sights are NOT allowed. Neither are peep sights. However, they do allow shooters to use the stick on aperture sights on their shooting glasses. There is a separate scoring for percussion, and flintlock actions, in most shoots. Underhammer guns are allowed. PRB ONLY. Oh, participants are encouraged to wear 1920s-'30s clothes, including bib overalls, wide ties, and straw hats. Boots, rather than flip-flops! :blah: :idunno: :surrender:
If you find the website for the Sgt. York Memorial Chunk Gun Shoot, coming up March 27, I think it also has the rules posted, which will give you more details. The NMLRA staff can also give you the rules. :hatsoff:
