Skychief,
Slip on over to the ALR site and check back a couple of weeks under shooting. It's been talked, questioned, lied about and put to bed more than a few times. You'll find a bunch of info from them what's done it. If you get hooked let me know, I've got a good chunker available.

Hey Papa, are you going to the York shoot next week? Hope the weather is good. We're headed down Friday.

Headed to York as well  Staying in Knoxville with some friends in the middle of the week then headed over Friday Morning :hatsoff:

Skychief: The Chunk Gun Shoots follow a traditional format. you shoot for score at 10 targets, one shot each. The Target has a Cross on it, and the shot closest to the center of that cross wins that " relay". The Total of the distances from the center of your ball hole in the target, to the center of that cross, for the 10 shots becomes your total "String" for the match, and the winner is the guy with the shortest "string".

Shots are fired at 60 yards, prone, shooting over a " chunk". This used to be a log, but the rules now allow shooters to bring their own wooden rests, with restrictions as to its construction.
At most matches, you are allowed about 3 "test" shots to zero your gun for the range conditions. You are permitted to use a " Spotter" stapled or glued to the actual target, to focus your front sight on so that the wind, and variations in height of any given load can be put on that cross, when everything is done right. Shaders over both the front and Rear Sights are allowed. Scopes, and Tube sights are NOT allowed. Neither are peep sights. However, they do allow shooters to use the stick on aperture sights on their shooting glasses. There is a separate scoring for percussion, and flintlock actions, in most shoots. Underhammer guns are allowed. PRB ONLY. Oh, participants are encouraged to wear 1920s-'30s clothes, including bib overalls, wide ties, and straw hats. Boots, rather than flip-flops! :blah: :idunno: :surrender:

If you find the website for the Sgt. York Memorial Chunk Gun Shoot, coming up March 27, I think it also has the rules posted, which will give you more details. The NMLRA staff can also give you the rules. :hatsoff:

I'll be heading up there on Friday as well. I practiced some yesterday and need much more from what my score wound up. :hmm:

Sorry guys but the extended weather forecast for the 27th is 60-70% chance of rain. that is for the cookeville Tn. area which is fairly close by. for your sake I hope the weatherman is wrong. I would love to go but I'm afraid I will have to work..............watch yer top knot..............

We practiced last Saturday and I had a pretty good group on my spotter. Then we shot a 6 shot match just for kicks and I was all over the place. My excuse was my chunk was a bit too high and the light was changing rapidly in the evening up that holler. At least I hope that was the problem. Everything else was fine.

We're having a shoot Sunday in Mingo County so I'll get a little more practice in.

Actually percussion and flint are scored the same. Except at the York shoot and some others, a separate award is given for the best X with a flintlock. Also at the York, the score results show if a shooter used a flintlock, if they put it on their targets.

Anybody know what kind of string measurements (10 shot) are usually shot at some of the matches? How short of a string might it take to win? Curious :hmm: .

At the 2008 York shoot, Paul Griffith won with a 3.560" string. The year before, he won with a 3.443. Last year, Mike Medjeski won with a 1.485, but that was a 6 shot match due to the weather. I have heard of some matches being won with a 2.5 or so inch string.

To stay in the top 20 at the York shoot, you'll have to shoot under 7 inches (based on the 2008 scores. At most of the shoots I've been in, you can come in pretty good with a longer string. The York is a different animal. Here, you're shooting against all of the top chunk gunners in the nation as well as those who might get a lucky shot or two. To be in the top 20 last year, you had to shoot a 4.600 or better, but like I said, that was a 6 shot match.

Ranger,
I was going to go down but the back won't let me. Had some major reconstruction early last year and still can't make more than 2 hours in the car. Thank goodness Friendship is within that distance.

Ranger,
I made 10-12 in a row and am determined to get back down. The York is the world series of chunk shooting. Good luck!

Thats what I heard. This is my first trip down, and my first chunk match :surrender: . ( I shot mostly 5bull log shoots so far)

These are Mikes targets from 2009. I wish he could have finished out the ten as it could have been a really good string Possibly the best we would have known of shot in a match. Although I do think that I'm going to tell him that the object is to hit the X, not just rub the snot out of it.

That is real nice... That would have been around 3" or so if ten shots were like that :applause:

I will be happy to keep them in the black :rotf:
