I was shooting my new Chief’s trade gun from North Star West (fantastic gun by the way) and having a grand old time when I was fooling around with different loads and I came up with this;

55 gr. of 2Fg Schuetzen, 1 over powder card, 20 gr. of Cream of Wheat, .535 ball, 20 CoW on top of the ball, and 1 over shot card. This is in a .540 bore trade gun.

It shot fantastic groups from 25 yards. The real test will be at fifty yards, but has anyone tried or heard of this before?

Sure haven't...kind of understand that putting something like cream-of-wheat over the powder would serve as an over-powder wad of sorts.
But don't know what benefit there would / should / could be in putting cream-of-wheat over the top of a ball and then still using an OS card.

What's the thinking there...that the CoW on top of the ball, specifically down around the circumference, somehow acts as a patch would as the ball traveled back up the bore??

Agree with RB. The CoW would act as a buffer behind the ball and would disipate very quickly hense having no effect on the ball once leaving the muzzle. CoW after the ball I'm at a loss as to what advantage it would serve... :hmm: this has me wondering what effect a CoW wad would have on a shot load? One would think it could tighten patterns or at the least not put a hole in the pattern as a 1/2" fiber wad can do.

I tried a few shots without the CoW over the ball and it shot well but when I tried with the CoW over the ball it shot a little better. I tried the CoW over the ball by accident the first time, someone was talking to me while loading, so I just put a OS card on the load and shot it and it when right into the group I already started. So I kept doing it and noticed a slight improvement. I will go back and do more shooting at 50 yards. That should really separate the chaff from the wheat.

What the heck!! If it shoots real good at fifty yards why argue with success!
Besides it's a nice way to make sure the deer gets his proper amount of fiber!! :rotf:

Just an update on the test I conducted using Cream of Wheat as a filler. Well, I tried shooting the load I mentioned above at 50 yards from a rest and the results were disappointing. I fired 4 groups and my best group was 5 ½ inches, whereas firing a load of 69 grains of 3Fg with a wool felt wad and a .520 round ball and .015 patch yielded groups of 2 to 3 ½ inches from a rest. I started to run out of time and powder but I got one group of three shots all touching using 55 grains of 3Fg with that ball and patch combo. Next outing I will test that load more thoroughly.
