I had changed out the factory sights on my Investarms Model 120A rifle due to a wandering zero with the factory sights. The new Lyman 57 GPR tang sight has me thinking about attempting to reach out to steel targets at the three hundred yard line.

Anyone do this with a similar rifle?

You won't have enough adjustment for 300 yards IMHO My 50 bench using a Redfeild target rear did not have enough and it was higher that the lyman. For the 300 bench I had to put up an extended taller target to aim at and let the ball drop into the record target. Futile attempt twice tried with a round ball. I did get 1 20 point target.

Bet you run out of adjustment before you get there. I screwed the GHOST up 4 full turns to get from 100 to 200. Out to 300 would take 6 more turns, which I could reach with the extended post that came with the GHOST, but the Lyamn does not have any such quantity of travel available.

I sure did run out. To go to 200 from 100 setting was 168 clicks leaving very little to go. That is why I improvised with a taller bull above the record one.

Now wind was another matter the time I got a score was done early morning with no wind at all. I shot a light bench 50 cal. 120grns was my max of 2fg. The heavy bench guys shooting it had 58's using 230 or more grains. Those big balls blew less than the 50.

To install the Lyman 57 GPR tang sight, do you need to have a gunsmith drill and tap an additional hole ?

Not on a Lyman GPR but other rifles will likely require a new hole. I had to have a smith install my Lyman SML on a Cabela's/Investarms rifle.

Use a Lyman 57 SML rear sight and a Lyman 17A AHB globe sight (.404 high) with Lee Shavers inserts on a Green Mountain LRH fast twist barrel in a TC Renegade stock shooting paper patched bullets as IdahoRon suggests. Unless the wind is really blowing I can consistently hit an 18 inch steel target (need it brightly painted so I can see it against the berm) at 300 yards. Still seem to have some adjustment left out to 500 yards plus, but have not shot that distance enough to have confidence. Using 90 grains of fff Swiss under the RCBS cast bullet IdahoRon recommends.

Gee bullets not A ROUND BALL eh? Very different . ML think round ball first not elongated bullets 2 different things
So I missed the forum rule making elongated bullets a forbidden topic. My apologies.

Sixgun, there is not enough adjustment with Lyman 57 rear sight to get on target with a roundball. Suggest you use the HC/PC Redfield Target Sight and an extended target to aim at as others have recommended, although some have suggested it was futile to shoot roundballs at 300 yards, my reason for suggesting ‘elongated’ bullets.

Since when is speaking about an elongated bullet forbidden?
It isn't against the forum rules as long as it is talking about a lead bullet.

As for shooting a patched roundball at 300 yards and getting a consistent group, IMO, it's not likely unless "consistent" means something close to ± 4 feet.

Even if a person had their roundball gun sighted in for 300 yards (which would probably need a tang mounted site with a tall "ladder" on it.) the likelihood of there being a cross wind over that distance is very likely.

Just a 5 mile an hour crosswind will blow a .50 caliber roundball, shot at a muzzle velocity of 1600 fps, 47 inches to the side at 300 yards. That's almost 4 feet.

If the wind was something you could easily feel like a 10 mile an hour breeze, the ball would be blown 94 inches (7.8 feet) off the point of aim.

Well shooting at 1,000 yards is normal with the right rifle a 451 or 461 match rifle . Think Creedmore stuff . But round ball much beyound 200 is a bigger ask but our friend capandball manages it with his useual style . Despite' Bakers Remarks' saying if the weather be calm he had fired very well at 300 . at 4 & 500 he sometimes strook but considered it unlikely. Even it did give 4 foot groups. This said should a group of riflemen pot at a cannon crew they wouldn't be as ready to stick their heads up nor would columns or horse units So it had its place . Colonel Hanger recounts being shot at a 400 yds by Rebel rifle men who manage to hit a horse close by when he had considered that range safe enough . How reliable the marksmans performance can only be guessed at but fluke or not it is effective fire . I don't beleive the ."Old so & so could hit an officer in the head stood off hand at 200 yards "nonsence .If he did it was fluke nothing more . Rudyard
