Need some help identifying this antique. It's been in the family for generations. Also looking for recommendations to have this piece refurbished.
It can be done (make a whole gun). Won't be cheap nor a one-night project, but parts are available if you wish to search. I'd find all the parts first, then get good advice as to how to go about the process. In the end, your family will have something to enjoy for years to come. Why not?Looks like what's left of a M1842 musket. The sideplate outline and bolster on the barrel lead me to this opinion. You're missing so much of it, it's hard to tell which arsenal made it. The barrel has been shortened. Gonna be expensive to try to refurbish. Because it's missing so many parts, you won't really restore the gun so much as create a parts gun, because you'll be adding parts from many different muskets ( ie a lock from one musket, barrel bands from another, swivels from another).
The bore is .45". Did the M1842 come in anything other than .69"?Looks like what's left of a M1842 musket. The sideplate outline and bolster on the barrel lead me to this opinion.
