I got the Redhead master catalog today and there is a new side lock from Traditions in it. It is called a Mountain Rifle. Brown hardware, single barrel key, cant tell if the barrel is brown or blue. The stock looks like curly maple but the description says walnut. The descritions dont say what caliber though.

It's nice to see a new sidelock, but the price is a bit steep-$550 bucks! :shocked2:

I heard rumor that these were from the old stock of A&H parts left over.
I dont know for certain if this is valid intel, but it made sense.
They were good guns if that is the case!

Good Morning!
From the looks of the rifle on Traditions Web site, it looks like a A & H mountain rifle.
I am sure there will be some range reports soon.
Enjoy your day!

Pretty gun...I like the 32" barrel. Nice grain...they probably took pictures of the best one!

I saw them firsthand at the SHOT Show back in Feb. I don't know what the finish is like now, but the one I handled at the show had a horrid finish that looked like parkerizing. The sales rep at the show seemed proud of the fact that it looked like parkerizing, so I assumed that it's the finish the factory would be using, rather than just a cobbled together prototype for the show.

They mentioned that they had bought up the rest of Austin & Halleck's parts and the guns were made from them. So essentially they're Austin & Halleck Mountain Rifles with a horrid finish, selling for a couple hundred dollars more.

I don't know if they will be making their own parts from now on or if this is a limited run until they run out of parts. Considering that most of the parts on A&H guns were made by Ardesa, and Traditions is the main Ardesa importer, they're the logical choice to continue the line.

On the positive side, A&H guns had amazingly flawless, mirror perfect bores. From what I can tell, they're just about the most accurate factory rifle available. I hope Traditions keeps that up, because their own models fall a bit short in comparison. I have several Traditions guns and several A&H guns. The A&H guns will outshoot any Traditions, T/C, Lyman or Investarm guns that I own.

The original A&H guns had maple stocks. On some of the higher dollar models, they were nicely figured. On the rest, they were quite plain. I hope Traditions at least stayed with maple.

If they stick with the AH lock, it's certanily worth more. If they go back to a Traditions lock while keeping the high dollar...... Not!!!!!!!!

If someone has that much money to spent, save up a little bit more and get a custom gun you'll be far better off. :v

Exactly what I thought. The rifle I ordered is only $400.00 bucks more, but I am getting exactly what I want, and it is made with parts of known quality to boot.

It is nice to see another production side lock but that price tag will do nothing to bring in newbies to the sport-they will just buy a fugly in-line for a third of the price.

The Sportsmen Warehouse has other Traditions guns for 30 to 40 percent less than the "list" price and if that holds true for the Mountain rifle it will compete with Lyman's GPR. Traditions intent I'm sure. Now if they just put in kit form.

For the life of me I can not understand why they would blue the barrel and not brown it. I also can't understand why Lyman will not at least give the option of a browned barrel on their Great Plains rifle. WEIRD! :youcrazy:

A kit is a kit. Lyman would be smart to offer the GPR with a browned barrel in a finished rifle.

The original Austin & Halleck rifle was entirely browned. The Traditions version isn't really even blued, unless they changed the finish since the SHOT Show. The finish they had on it when I saw it looked horrible!

Seems as if Traditions want to built a counterpart against Pedersolis Hawken and Lymans7Investarms GPR. But I think at that price it won't work. I'm surprised if it is getabale in Germany. But I will not buy it, because Roy will deliever soon.

Economics. Are you willing to pay the extra $$$ for that brown finish?

Not all ML rifles were browned, BTW. I have seen several original rifles from the early to mid 1800s that had traces of original blue on the barrel. One very nice original Hawken had more than traces of blue.

Granted the blue was different than on today's production guns, but many originals were blued.

IMHO, that factory blue on production guns could merely be rubbed back to replicate a well used look, if that is what one prefers.

Though I haven't tried it, a rubbed back factory finish with a light application of Laural Mountain Forge brown on the rubbed areas might give a more believable appearance of a well used, but well cared for rifle.

Just kinda thinkin....typing out loud, so to speak...type.
