I have a Leonard Day percussion rifle in the .62 cal. It has one rifled barrel and one smoothbore barrel. Both barrels are fairly accurate and the rifle is very well balanced. Was wondering if anybody on this forum has any experience with these?

Not that one but I have a Hopkins & Allen swivel breech rifle with 45 cal barrels. It has numrich arms barrels and I must have been lucky because it is very accurate with both barrels. I have heard seveal negative comments about numrich arms barrels but mine are very accurate. At twentyfive yrds I can put three balls in one large hole. (alright, I could back when the eyes were better )

I have two of Mr Days swivel breach rifles ..one has a matching swivel pistol ..neither one of those have ever been shot and probably never will ...his quality is excellant and i am always looking for another

I have a swivel-breech "Jaeger" that Leonard built for me a while back. Mine is also a .62 caliber but it has 24" swamped barrels--both rifled. It's good to be able to get off a second shot without lowering the rifle from my shoulder. I use a .600 ball and a lubed .015 patch over 80 grains of GOEX FFG as a standard load for pretty much every thing. It's a light and nicely balanced little rifle that carries easily all day long.

The .600 ball with the 80 grns of BP must be the magic combination for the .62 cal, because both my rifled and smooth barrel have great accuracy with this load configuration.

ohio ramrod,
Welcome to the " Old Eyes' club! :)

Considering that the alternative is to die young I am happy to join. My shooting went down hill when I went to bifocals now that I am into trifocals I just shoot to enjoy the smell of black powder. Ah that smells soooo GOOD.

As am I. I have been a diabetic for 30+ years and have found that a cheap pair of readers are a great help. I don't care if the target fuzzes a bit but I want to have my front and rear sights in as sharp a focus as possible.

Not yet. In Massachusetts they won't let us use a gun like this in the primitive deer season. Single shot only. And there's too many people in the woods during the modern season for my taste. But given my self imposed range limit of 100 yards and the reality that even a 100 yard shot is a long one around here, I have no doubt this load would cleanly take a deer size animal--or a bear for that matter. And this is a very accurate rifle with the round bottom grooved rifling and a fast lock. I could deactivate one barrel by removing the frizzen, but that kind of spoils the whole idea for me. By the way, my rifle carries serial number 606 and a little bit of folk art type engraving.

It does seem to be the sweet spot my day doglock smoothie uses the same load as well.

The same results from multiple independent sources, the Holy Grail of Research :hatsoff:

runnball,
Those cheap eyeglasses do work! The sight`s on the Leonard Day are still pretty clear using the cheap eyeglasses! Like you they discovered I was diabetic in 2000,runs in the family, hard to fight genes!

What size ball and what powder load do you use? I have one of these.
