Would anyone be interested in a casual get together, show off and shoot in the Verde Valley on Saturday, January 30, 2016, weather permitting. There should be some nice metal targets that make a lot of noise, and perhaps a "no lose" blanket shoot competition, where everyone who brings a prize ($10 or so), gets a prize, but the winner gets first choice and on down; ties go to the one in period clothing. Traditional open iron sights only, on the blanket shoot.

Anyone with even the slightest interest speak up.

This was discussed on another thread before the Holidays, but has gotten buried since then.

I'm glad you're going ahead with the shoot. I don't seem to be getting anywhere fast, but if I can get my guns off the mountain, will sure be there.. Keep me posted please.

Bring your cap and ball revolver, if you can't get to your rifles, and shoot at half the distance, along with any other pistols. The whole idea is just to break the ice and meet some other folks, not to get overly competitive, or worry about the small stuff.

Maybe some other folks from the Salt River Valley would be interested in sharing rides? I think you would be coming from Mesa?

On the period clothing, this is not a period correct only event. There won't be no dress code. Anyone with a traditional muzzleloader is welcome to shoot it. If you have period correct stuff though, bring it along and show it off if you have a mind to.

Just an update. There has been interest in this, but folks seem a bit shy about posting on this thread. A couple of guys are talking about camping out, since they have a longer drive. That is an option, as camping on Coconino NF is still open anywhere but the Red Rock Ranger District, immediately surrounding Sedona. You need to drive on designated roads, but can pull off of them to camp just about anywhere; no facilities, of course. Thankfully it is not as restricted as some areas.

If it's gonna rain, like today, I'll stay snug, dry and warm in a motel. No fun packing a wet tent. Ok, so I'm chicken, I admit it. ha ha But, I'm coming for sure.

I just talked to Irish Mick, and he is going to be setting up some good targets, including a walk though, some paper targets and some gongs. He'll be in full period gear, as will others. He is talking about having a fire and cooking some breakfast and having some hot water for those that want some tea. You need to bring your own provisions, for whatever your eating needs are.

How long it lasts will depend on when we start and how many show up. We are going to get exact directions with an odometer, so I will post later with that. I think it will be about a week from now before we have a good reliable weather forecast, though.

We only have about 5 people for sure at this time. Mick is asking for $5 per person, just to cover targets and paint, which is more than fair. That is besides the $10 minimum value gift for the blanket shoot, if you want in on that.

This should be fun.

Here are the directions to where we plan to shoot, subject to weather and etc.

From Phoenix: Take I-17 north through Camp Verde to exit 293, (the next exit after Cliff Castle Casino). The exit sign will say Lake Montezuma, McGuireville. You turn left over the freeway and head north on Cornville Rd. (county hwy 30) 4.7 miles to the junction of hwy 30 and hwy 78. At this junction, you turn left onto a dirt road that goes through a cattle guard. This dirt road is Forest Rd. 119a. Follow it about 1 mile to Forest Rd. 92235V, which is a small track that turns off to the left. We will be right there, only a few yards down the road.

Coordinates, if you want to find it on Google Maps or GPS are 34.689, -111.8625.

We are putting a name on this. It will be Irish Mick's Frontier Rifle Frolic, for those that need a name. Mick will be providing targets and instructions for the shoot, and will act as RO during the shoot.

As far as camping, there is another track that turns off FR 119a, 1/4 mile before the one we will be shooting on that has a couple of good places to camp, with a ridge between you and the paved road. Bring your own firewood, if you want a fire, and everything else; no facilities. It is also before a steep cut in FR 119a, and within easy walking distance for those that don't want to drive over that wash. We both drove over it in high clearance vehicles, in 2wd, though.

Okay, we've got a schedule of events:

1. Walkthrough - 3 targets with a value of 10 points per target, 2 shots allowed to hit target.

2. Paper target at 50 paces - Score target.

3. 10" gong at 35 paces - 5 shots, 1 point per hit.

4. Pistols targets will be set up if enough people bring single shot pistols.

If you have a period correct kit, 1840s or earlier, bring it and show it off to everyone.

Anyone who wants to lay out some goods for sale or trade may do so. Mick says he has some good stuff including a couple buffalo robes he is going to set out to see if anyone wants to buy or trade for them. This might be worth it to attend, even if you are not wanting to shoot.

More later.

I have a pair of new mocosons, size twelve I'll bring, my feet are to big to use them.
Sounds like a fun time, am looking forward to it.

I'm going to come up Friday and camp overnight, that way I can help set things up. Probably get there early in the afternoon.

 Mick and Andrew Algood planed and executed this fun shoot. I want to thank them for all the work put into the shoot, Five of us me there and made friends and enjoyed shooting together. Being a new guy to this, I learned a lot and these men were more than willing to help me and ensure I had a great time. We had one fellow from Tucson, one from Tempe, two from Flagstaff and one from Cornville/Camp Verde. Sure was fun, and meeting and making some new friends was a real treat. Thanks to Irish Mick, who was called away and wasn't able to attend, and Andy for a job well done.

All in all it turned out well, even though Irish Mick could not make it. We had two overnight campers and five shooters. Forum Member nessmuk won the shoot, but a good time was had by all.

Well, those who didn't show up missed on a great day of fun and visiting, making new friends and such. I personally want to thank Native Arizonan and Irish mick for getting us all together and having a nice shoot. I'm the new guy in the bunch and was able to learn a lot from the old pros who were willing to help and advise me and that really made it fun for me.

Thanks to all who were there.
