The A&H Mountain Rifles do look nice, I've held and shouldered one but not shot one. The barrels are made in Spain, and I think the locks and hardware are Spanish as well.

I've heard of some minor and a few major quality issues with A&H.

Also, take a look at the new Rocky Mountian Hawken from DP. Really nice looking rifle.

Also take a look at the DP Frontier. I recently snagged one up and it's really a sweet rifle.

If you are looking for a 100% made in the USA production rifle, take a look at Thompson/Center. I've several different T/C rifles including my first Hawken 50 cal kit in 1970. T/C's are really excellent production rifles. Lifetime warranty and service is for real. Not BS. :

Shoot! Thanks for all the advice! We might go hunting afterall

Your right! American made all the way! I do have a an old CVA that I bought. I bought it, to save it! Very poor shape!

I plan on getting another, and passing the cva to the little guy

Unfortunately, I think T/C is the only US MFG that makes production sidelocks.

They are nice though and even used, carry lifetime warranty and support from T/C.

Before you buy, check out a post titled "Austin&Halleck- customer service = F" on the General Interest forum, posted about two months ago. Some posts there mention that they are unhappy with A&H products and service.

Deer Creek Products claim to be 100% US made, but I have no personal knowledge of them. Apparently they bought the CVA service stock and now sell those parts. They also have several guns that they sell in their catalog that they claim are all US manufacture. I am sure that someone on the forum has held one and can comment in detail...

From what I could find on this board there are very Few problems with Austin Halleck rifles.I have a 50 cal,1 in 66 inch twist, percussion Mtn rifle, select grade and it is Gorgeous. The fit and finish are excellent. This rifle shoots better than I can (a friend of mine proved that to me)and has very good balance. Is it better than a CVA or TC or Lyman ? It "may" not shoot any better but in the looks department None of the others can compare to a A&H.As far as customer service goes..... I have no idea how "good" A&H service is, I never needed it and my rifle is 5-6 years old and has held up well. The main thing is to buy the rifle YOU like, that is what is important.

The DeerCreek rifles are the old CVA Mountain rifle pattern. For 220$ you get a plain piece of wood and a set of parts that would allow you to build a decent gun. If you want to go to nicer wood, it is available supposedly.

I second Sully's opinion! I love mine and it blows the other comercial guns away.
