Bacon has a lot of salt in it,,,I wouldn't be putting it in/on any of my firearms. Just me..

WOW I didn't think of the salt part.

Thanks!!!!!!
Jay

ps too bad i really like bacon :)

Lard from the grocery store would be the same grease. Not sure if salt is added, check the label.

if ya just used it for a session at the range then THOROUGHLY cleaned yer gun you'd probably be okay. but the hunger pangs from smellin' that bacon & honey would probably keep ya from shootin' yer best :thumbsup: . luck & have a good'en, bubba.

I have used a mixture of 80%lard 20% beeswax since they outlawed the sale of sperm whale oil in the late 60's. In below freezing weather I just use pure lard. :idunno:

Bacon fat mixed w/ any suitable lube would be tremendous....just think of the anticipation of going to the range and licking one's fingers after each loading....a gourmet's delight. This would be a welcome change from the bland, normally used lubes.

In some olden time movies the shooter often wets his finger and then rubs the front sight {like in Sgt. York}....didn't realize until now that it was his addiction to salty bacon fat instead of just making the sight more visible or whatever...Fred

Seems that I read on one of these forums a while back that if you boil the bacon grease in water that the salt will settle out and leave pure grease on top. Does that sound right?

What will salt do that black powder residue won't?

I have a batch of bacon grease that I "rendered" via stock pot and boiling water. A couple of water changes & the stuff likely doesn't have enough salt in it anymore to be of concern.

While it would work in a pinch, I've found an endless supply of beef tallow. My local supermarkets collect beef and pork fat trimmings in 50 gal drums and PAY someone to take it. They are more than happy to give me all I can carry. Rendering it down produces a smooth, clean and odorless tallow that makes an excellent patch or ball lube when blended with a little beeswax.

I used to be able to get free fat & meat scraps from the local supermarket to boil with cornmeal to make mush for my dogs. now they keep it all & sell it to some outfit for makin' soap.

yes indeed bacon grease has mucho salt. I have been using Tenderflake lard up here in Canada with 50-50 bees wax with good results for the last couple of years. Depending on the temp and time of year I vary the concentration of bees wax to lard. Cold weather less bees wax, warm weather more. Have noticed that this combo has reduced my need for cleaning between shots. Your mileage may vary;

Are you sure you know how to skin Grizz, Pilgrim?

I haven't tried it but I've been thinking of punching over powder wads straight from strips of bacon for my revolvers. :grin:
Just take care. If you have all meat the gun will shoot high, all fat it shoots low. If you get a piece thats 1/2 and 1/2 you just dont know where it will fly.

I'll zero it at 25 yards with half and half then progressively add more meat till it get it right on at 50 so I won't have to change my sights. Do you think it might make a difference if I put the fat or meat at the top? :hmm:
