Hi everybody,
I was in conversation with a friend who said his father used Bag Balm, (used by Diary farmers to treat the cows udder) as a RB patch lube. He also used it on this rifle stock to keep it moisture proof. Has anyone else heard of this? :hmm:

Best thing going for cracked hands, especially around saltwater. Never tried it, but can't see a problem for stock treatment. Maybe not for patch lube either, unless it doesn't hold up to heat or has some extra ingredient that's nasty to the bore. It will remind you a lot of vaseline, which I also haven't tried as a patch lube.

I tried it as a patch lube one day didn't work to good for me,but my rifle likes a wet lube.

It's good for whatever ails ya.

Since Bag Balm is mostly "petrolatum", which is another name for "petroleum jelly", it essentially is Vaseline, with lanolin added. (with a small amount is hydroxyquinoline sulfate, which is an antiseptic)

Now ya know why I've got it. :rotf:
I didn't buy it just for the pretty can!
:haha:

A big thank you Claude, and to the rest of you guys. Informative and witty answers. This forum has added both information and amusement to my life.
Thanks to all

Yagee,
I have always had a can in the medicine
chest for as long as can remember. Great stuff
for burns to dry skin. Never used it in or on
my M/L's though.
snake-eyes :hmm:

My brother-in-law raised goats for a time and still uses that stuff for everything from chapped lips to axe wounds.

Think I'll stick to boiled linseed oil or paste wax for waterproofing a stock. Though, pertolatum and lanolin sounds like a start on Cosmoline. But you could dip a gun in the LaBrea Tar Pits and waterproof it, too.
