I had a friend admiring my Rapine bag mould. He thought $75 was a bit steep and asked if there was any other source of bag moulds. I had no answer, does anyone have an answer?

Hi there, Art. I saw something, somewhere, where a guy modified a mold Dixie sells to make a close approximation of a bag mold. They come with handles that look like a pair of scissors. He just cut off most of the scissor handle loop part and ended up with a passable mold. You would have to check their catalog for what sizes are available. Co C 2/34th Armor

My ears are burning! You guys talking about me? Here's those pics:

I lopped off the handle loops, file down the stubs and waloha! There you have it. And if you are really ambitous, you can recontour the mold head.

Very good Claypipe! Sure beats "converting" a large pair pliar handles, that I've seen a couple of...pliars are always bright, shinny, even taping them they don't have that "just right" look. :redthumb:

I must have been really ambitious back in 1978 then :)
After lopping off the handle loops, I recontoured the head and handles on my .660 Dixie mold with a belt sander and a file. Gives it a more traditional look and makes it a little smaller overall. Then I browned the whole outside of the thing. It's held up perfectly...I still use it for casting up all of my Charleville balls.
But Dixie also has a mold similar to the Rapine pouch mold, if you only need a .40 ball or smaller. The Dixie #MO0103 "Kentucky Style Brass Mould" is only $37.95 .

My brass Dixie .40 cal bag mould throws something that more resembles an onion than round ball.

Pretty poor cherry work.

Uhhhhh, make up your mind will ya? Your previous post said, "it throws a ball that looks like a turnip".
So is it a turnip or an onion? :)

Just be glad it doesn't throw one that looks like a banana or a carrot. Someone might try to put a sabot on it and shoot it out of an inline. :blah:

I am confused: Is this meaning "say goodbye to the best"? That would be a reason to cry I suppose.
Or does it mean "buy the best"? If so, why cry at all if you have the best? :)
Where is the guy at Dixons? I'm always looking for alternate sources.

I only have one Dixie mold. It's the hair iron type that I reshaped. It casts a ball with slight cherry rings all around, but it is pretty much round and shoots quite well from my musket :).
Everything else I cast with LEE molds. The LEE's are "the best" for my needs.
Keep in mind that each man's "best" may differ according to his means and requirements.
