If you'll look at factory finished Lyman's and TC's you'll see that the inside of the barrel is the same bright shiny blue as the outside.
But they use a hot dip bluing process not the method that the OP was talking about. When doing a bluing process where you heat the barrel in hot water and put the chemical solution on by a gloved hand and then back into the hot water, you generally plug the barrel with rubber plugs. At least that was the way that I was taught.
 
I officially hate this kit...
1) all ALL of the screws are too long and have to be ground down
2) the wood is crazy soft.
3) the hammer doesn't line up to the cone... I heated it to twist it to align and it crystalized and popped.
4) The sear snapped... I don't know how...

This is so much fun to build!!!
I love to hate it!
