You sure can obviously shoot along side the best! In my own rifles I like pretty tight combos; they consist of a ball .010' to .005" under bore diameter, a patch thick enough to compress well into grooves and Hoppes or TOW mink oil for lube. Example: a .440" or .445" ball with a .024" canvas patch. The bore is .450" + plus groove depth of .012" + .012" = .474" to fill with a patch. .498" - .474" = .019" to .024" of patch compression, depending on actual ball size, in the grooves.
