Does anyone have plans or instructions for making a ball bag with the wood stopper?

I don't, but if I were to make one I would line the inside of the spout with a raw hide belting. Wet and let it shrink dry around my stopper..

Twice.

Get some rawhide, make a pear shaped pattern the size you want it. Cut out two pieces and then make your holes in both pieces. Soak the two pieces in warm water until flexable. stich them together then fill with sand or rice, really pack it in. Let dry, remove the filler you used and you'll have a ball bag. I actually soak first before making my holes.

Two budget ball bag patterns:

The first is a softball cover. We made some of these for a group of new ML shooters. This was a team and we wanted them to have a simple and inexpensive bag at the range rather than dropping them all over the place. My son and I were playing softball at the time and we had some dead balls looking for a new life. I also had copper tubing and a flare tool.

We got old softballs and cut the threads. Then took one of the 2 pieces and folded it against itself to make a bag shape. Then cut the thin strap at the top. From there you stitch from one side to the other. You can make a spout out of a flared piece of copper tubing; carve one or even turn a wooden spout in a lathe.

This will give you a basic concept for adapting with better leather later depending upon the size of your balls and how many you care to tote around.

The second is Mike's can pattern.
Mike Nesbitt uses a frozen Welches' Grape Juice can as a pattern and basically mirrors that with leather. This also work well. I have one that he made 15 years ago and it is still one of my favorites. This one is quite functional and you would not figure the pattern if you were not told.

I hope that either or both of these work for you.

Are ball bags PC? I have read a couple of accounts of a mountain man reaching into his hunting pouch and discovering he was out of ammunition. I can't ever remember reading about a small bag for carrying lead balls. Were lead balls carried in a pocket within the hunting pouch or just in the bottom of the bag.

In South Carolina, I have seen a horn that was drilled out to about .54 cal with a heavy stopper. This was a close companion of the powder horn that was also with it. The rifle there was .50 caliber if I recall correctly.

The people at the house were wondering why a second powder horn would have needed such a large opening.

I think that this was Walnut Grove.
