Trying to get a new 40 cal. gun to shoot. Bore measures
.416. The .395 lee mould I bought is making .398 balls. Now
simple math would say that a .018 patch would be minimum.
The gun is equipped with a false muzzle. What is your opinion on patch size ? .020 seems pretty thick. I cant seem to find a slightly larger ball mold. :hmm:

Are you thinking; .398 + .018 = .416? You must measure both sides of the patch against the ball if this is the case. It would be; .398 + .018 + .018 = .434...

What is your land measurement? I'm guessing the .416 is the groove measurment? :hmm:

If the .416 is the groove, your starting point should be;

Groove..... .416
Ball....... .398

Difference.. .018 divided by 2 = .009 patch, (so probably a .010 patch...

This being the case you have some room to play. Example:

Groove...... .416
Ball........ .390

Difference.. .026 divided by 2 = .013 patch, (so probably a .015 patch...

Uncompressed the .398 ball and .018 patch, should measure .434

Uncompressed .020 patch with, the same .398 ball should measure .438

If yore use'n pillow ticking (not pre-cut patchs), you might try "short-starting" a ball with a 8-10" strip of ticking,.... then pull the ticking and ball back out of the bore and check the ball for "weave imprint" from the material.

If ther is a "weave imprint" and the patched ball feels fairly snug as push it (lubed) down the bore and seat it on the powder-charge, you should be off to a good start!!
