Wanting a custom ball starter for my .40 caliber rifle. I’d like one based on a historic original featured in Ned Robert’s book, The Muzzle Loading Cap Lock Rifle:
As you can see, it’s just a tapered wooden knob with a short wooden shaft. Something fetching like maple for the knob might be nice. The shaft should be 3/8” to closely fit my .40 caliber bore and only needs to be about 3” long. It should be of good straight grained hickory for strength. I’d like the tip of the shaft to have a brass ferrule for protection, and cupped for a .40 caliber roundball.
Any craftsmen out there up to the challenge? I’d make it worth your while. I’d try to build one myself but just don’t have the time and will be moving soon so most of my tools are packed up. Also if you have any contact info for possible builders please let me know who they are so I can contact them. Thanks guys!
