I've made several ball starters. Begin with a round ball fron a lathe, a handle from a craft store,a branch, antler, or whatever strikes your fancy. Drill a hole to accept a short dowel close to the size of your gun's bore to use as an initial starter and another for a longer dowel which you cut to at least 6 inches. Epoxy both into your chosen handle. Find an "gasp" empty rifle or appropriate caliber pistol shell at your local range which will accept the small end of your gun's ramrod. Drill a hole in the handle you selected to accept the shell, primer side first, and cement it with epoxy. This will be invaluable if you are in the field and need to hammer the shot down the barrel with your hand.
Experiment. Handcrafted ball starters are not expensive and can be fun to make.
