Who is boring barrels and how large could you go with a 54cal TC barrel? Awhile back I found a NIB TC 54cal round ball barrel. No, I don't want to bore this barrel. I am looking for a lock, stock, trigger assembly and furniture for either a Hawken or Renegade to mount this barrel on and may have found one. All looks good on this gun except the barrel. Considering having the bad barrel bored to a smooth bore. Would a 10 ga. be within reason? The only flaw with this plan is that once again it leaves me with an extra barrel. Yah I know I could change barrels when I wanted to. Or find parts for another gun.
Thanks,
Ed

Nope! There's just not enough barrel there.

I seem to remember that .58 is all you can go on a 15/16 and .62 on a 1" barrel. All this depends on how deep the dovetails and drilled holes are.

But if you could??? 10 gauge with a TC stock Ouch!!! I would have to keep a rag with me to wipe the snot off of me and the gun. Kind of puts a new meaning to fire and forget.

Bobby Hoyt would be the guy to do it and he knows his stuff but be prepared to wait a couple of years.

That's the story.
Bobby Hoyt told me the biggest he can go is 56 cal with a 15/16" barrel, and he did a 1" barrel for me to the max of 62.

Now this is with the factory drilled TC barrels, and none of the drilled/taped holes can be deeper than .125.
The game changes with an undrilled new barrel.
But we still have to factor in the Breech plug, you can't bore one larger than the minor thread of the breech plug, and expect anyone to warranty the thing to be safe.
Toledo made that 12ga for the TC, but I've never even seen one let alone handle it for measuring.

Very good info. Thank you both. It is definitely a factory drilled barrel so .62 max.
I will keep this guys name for the future.
Take care,
Ed

I sent him one a couple months ago and he said sometime in December, so maybe 1/2 year backlog. Either that or he doesn't keep his promised dates. I don't know having never dealt with him before, but with such a good reputation, I assume he not only does good work, but on time as promised.

Turnover time for me was good, I think it was 7 weeks, but I sent it off season in like February.
I have heard that he has received a huge amount of requested work this summer.
I guess I got in before the rush. A very good experience here.

I may have talked out of turn a little.

I have heard Mr.Hoyt has enough business to keep him busy for the next couple of years. Some of this may be special projects that special require materials from other suppliers. So he may be able to turn out re-bore jobs in a more timely manner.

Best to talk to him direct....

Hopefully that contact info is current. And no he does not have a website.

I sent him one in June and got it back in August. It was about 8 weeks total. I had him bore out a 50 to 54. He did it on time as promised and a great job. Came back without a scratch on the browning and on time not to mention she is a tack driver. Will certainly send another.

I also had a 50 opened to 54
Think it was ballpark 8 weeks
Top notch work.
