At the moment i use the delightful 300 grain .45 acp round in a plastic sabot. YES that seems to be heresy around this place, but the accuracy cant be beat at the moment. And they are so incredibly efficient at taking deer.

Well i have been forced to consider changing my projectiles to conicals, patched round ball, or to the saboted hornady "hard ball".

The plastic sabots do not leave any residue behind in the barrel from plastic, lead, copper, or bullet lube.
How bad is the lead/lube fouling from a conical or patched roundball?

The fouling left behind after a lubed conical or ball patch is much softer than that left behind by a dry sabot. I think you will find it much easier to swab the bore and you will get many more shots off between swabbing.

All you have to worry about is the cotton fouling from patched round balls. The lead never touches the barrel.

Some guns like the T/C Hawken have a lint trap screw on the drum to empty the cotton fouling periodically. Others are designed just to let it be burned off as the gun is fired.

Most "lube fouling" is removed as the next ball is loaded. Universal Solvent will remove both cotton and lube fouling.

well don't that beat all, i never emptied the lint trap. that explains a lot of flyers when target shooting. LOL

You will need a heavy conical to keep the bullet moving the same way it does now. Cleaning isn't as bad as you may think with conicsls.

The only residue/fouling i have after shooting is the normal slime form the cumbustion of pyrode pellets. i can reload 3 times without swabbing fellas.
And cleanup is really just 15 minutes(2 dry patches on a .50 cal brush, 2 patches on brush with solvent, then 2 dry patches, and then its to the loading/cleaning jag with a patch holding a few drops of oil)

I reckon one of them new fangled dryer sheets should be used as a patch then, he he he.
