I've never seen originals like that. Most have rolled, exposed barrels.
I'd like to see it if authentic.

Out of the 430 patchbox photos shown in KENTUCKY RIFLE PATCHBOXES- ALL NEW VOLUME 2, Chandler & Whisker, © James B. Whisker 1992, 2 patchboxes with normal lids show no external evidence of a hinge.

These are:

#61, Danial B Border, Benford, Pa.

and

#132, C.J.Dupler, Pickaway County, Ohio.

There are several others which do not have the typical raised knuckle hinge but the pictures do show lines which would be the joints between the lid and the finale.

Unfortunately, the photos only show the patchboxes in their closed position so there is no way of knowing how the actual hinge was made.

Ahhh...yes, the Kentucky rifles 2 vol set by Shelby Gallien.....and the man who REALLY does justice to these...Marvin Kemper :hatsoff: made one a few yr back.....
Both these gentlemen inspired me to tackle this.
I don't have the ability to make the trigger group and trigger guard correctly.....so my artistic license supplemented with what I had available.
I also liked my rear sight, and estasion used.
The pub is the second hidden hinge box that I have built. With the help of Marvin, this one has a closer fitted gaps.. :hmm:
Use this lid brass, the file to fit......this box just needs a release spring, and it's done.....I'll get to that....the lock areas STILL need wood removed.....way to fat......and the set triggers need another file session as they aren't working correctly yet....but anybody that has put set triggers in.....you know how you devote a entire day to just file, test, file, test, file, test.....eat lunch....file, test, file, test..... :rotf:
