Went looking for a GM drop in barrel in 58, but it is discontinued for the next year. Being an impatient person (been waiting 6 years to get mine) I have decided to piece male it together through either Pecatonica River Long Rifle Supply or Track of the Wolf using their gunsmithing services. So the question is between Green Mountain, Rice or Colrain which barrel would you experienced gun-builders use?

All are excellent barrels but if it were me I would have to lean to the Rice. But thats just me. :thumbsup:

Both will probably out shoot most shooters. Rice usually has a better finish on it as it comes from the factory (minimal draw filing or sanding required) and has round bottom radius rifling, which fouls less, and is easier to clean and load. Rice usually comes with a plug installed. Green Mountain is usually a little more inexpensive, but will require more work on your part.

This question is to all who have responded. I notice that no one has recommended Colerain. May I ask why not? I'm not questioning anyone's judgment; this is just for future reference.

Colerain is fine it's just that you didn't see a lot of straight barrels out of them when Green Mountain was making them and they offered nothing over Green Moutain unless you were ordering one with radius (round bottom) rifling.
Some complain about Colerain's breeching but the straights don't come breeched anyway, from Rice or Green Mountain either, though Rice and Colerain will both do it for a fee.
Some complain that Colerain's exterior finish isn't as nice as Rice's but I have a Rice that is is rough as any Colerain I've seen and Green Mountain barrels are hit and miss and Colerain barrels file like butter.
Some have also reported that they had Colerain barrels with tight and loose spots in the bore. I have not experienced this and I've never heard of a problem that was brought to them that they didn't make right.
I own several Colerains and have not had these problems and you can't really go wrong with any of these companies. All are known to produce accurate, well made barrels.

Colerains quality control can be spotty at times.Their fit and finish both inside and out suffers sometimes from them pushing their cutting tools too long between sharpenings.When you get a good one they are fine when you don't well you will wish you got a different brand.

Thanks JD, Tallbear, and Jerry. This is good information to have. I noticed that TVManufacturing was selling Colerain instead of GM. I guess that's because of the delays at GM. I will check out Oregon Barrel. Thanks for the tip.

Every thing I've heard about Oregon Barrels has been positive other than they don't appear to rifle any barrels over 35 inches. Those who've bought 'em who I've heard from have been pleased.

Thanks JD. I saw the 35" limit on the Muzzleloading Emporium website. That is the only reason I won't get one of them as I want a 42". I still have some time to decide. Thanks again.
