Track of the Wolf pulls out a ledger, looks grimly at you while you fill out your Name and Address, DL#, Names of your children-two cousins-3 neighbors, then get a cheek swab and full dental bite imprint.
They've been doing that for at least a decade!

Sir, with respects I am all to familiar with certain areas and their wasteful spending, I have also witnessed much more good that certainly outweighed the negativity. I will say no more because this isn't the place to discuss political matters and opinions. Yet I will grab my :pop: and watch.

I just bought a pound last week, no I'd required. Only thing that changed was that it was $4 more expensive than when I bought some in the fall. :cursing:

There is a bit of confusion among the store employees when it comes to the jot and tiddle of the law concerning the sale of black powder. I am not surprised nor am I offended by an employee asking for a copy of my photo ID when buying black powder due to the Muslim nut cases blowing things up in all parts of the world. At least you are able to buy black powder at Bass Pro and don't have to buy large quantities to have it shipped to you. I am fortunate in that I bought a large quantity of Goex at Friendship before moving from Indiana. I now have what I consider a lifetime supply.

With due respects, I too, am all too familiar with "certain areas". In my experience the negative has outweighed the positive, apparently we have/had different perspectives.

It was not my intent to impune your knowledge or experience, if it read that way I apologize. I only meant to point out that black powder(among other things), for "civilian" consumption is a target, and we need to be aware of that, if we want continued access to it.

I understand the popcorn, but why grab your watch?

I wonder if his information was already on file... :hmm:

Yep, your probably right there.

As far as serial numbers/tracking. I searched all the usual places, and some unusual ones, and only came up with one other reference. Probably not the case, yet.

Agreed.

I think the days of ordering BP by the case or even smaller amounts and shipped UPS are numbered.
I'm guessing 3 years or less. More likely 2 years tops.
Lots of social unrest on the horizon for this summer. Gives them another excuse to tighten up regs.

" Never let a good crisis go to waste" ( Rahm Emanuel )

Same for having more than 2 or 3 pounds at home.

Just a matter of time.

BUY IT NOW.

Most of these kinds of regulations are simply so the government can say "they are doing something".

On my side of the border I have to (by law) keep two different ledgers.

One for the sale of powder (black, subs and smokeless) - that is kept for NRCAN who licences explosives etc in Canada. Require photo id (drivers licence or gun licence) - record the licence number and type/quantity of powder sold and the date.

Second ledger is for the sale of factory loaded ammunition, but not components. That is kept for the Firearms Officer. You can't buy pre-loaded ammo here without a firearms licence - so record the licence number, date, caliber and quantity of ammo.

The information in these (ledgers), which in our case is simply a spreadsheet on the computer behind the counter, doesn't get "sent" anywhere - there is no master data base or anything like that and after 3 years the records are purged.

Every couple of months the firearms officer stops in and "inspects" the ammo logs - basically just a quick look to make sure we are keeping them - he records nothing at all.

We have never had an NRCAN inspector stop buy to check the powder logs - although, if someone blew up the bridge into town with Goex or IMR 4064 they would probably stop by and "get a print out".

Does either of those lists make a single person safer - not a chance - they would only be "after the fact things" anyhow. But the government can say to those who are deathly afraid of "anything firearm related" that "we have regulations which are strictly enforced and we control these dangerous items that keep you awake at night with worry".

PS - Goex is now over $40/pound and Swiss is going for $66 - so I don't feel sorry for you guys on that side of the border :v

" Never let a good crisis go to waste" ( Rahm Emanuel )

A staple of modern government, heard it vocalized and participated in it long before Rahm was on the radar.

I am not pessamistic about the loss of access to black, but I am certain we need to remain vigilant and be vocal ourselves, in order to keep what is the essence of our sport. That is why it is important to track down and discuss issues like serial numbers, etc. and find if they are true, or not.

galamb, it sounds as though the regs there are much like your country's restrictions on alcohol. Tax and regulate it to within their definition of moderation/usefulness.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe it was NOT store policy, and maybe this employee was copying it for the intent of future identity theft?

I'm very careful about showing a DL as ID. I'm MUCH more comfortable showing a passport as ID.

Definitely a possibility, and nothing wrong with politely asking to speak to a manager to verify. Would expose the identity theft angle to both sides at the store.

FYI, my local Bass Pro said they didn't either, but I spoke with the manager of the store and found that the guy behind the archery counter said they did. He asked me what kind I wanted, I said 3f at 1 lb and he went back and got me a pound.

Most of the people who work at my local Bass Pro don't know that they carry it. You have to be lucky to talk to the one guy who does. :haha:

BP is getting ridiculously expensive. Back in the 70's we could get it for a buck a pound. Now it is 20 or more times that and I can go through a pound a week. :shocked2:
and in 1975 a typical house cost 48000; the median income was 12,686; private college was 3776 a year; a gallon of gas averaged 59 cents; coffee was about 1.12 per pound; etc.. etc.. 1970's was a LONG time ago so yes BP is a lot more expensive now, but so is just about everything else.

Actually I lernt sumthin with this rant. Did you know the average cost of a gallon of milk was $1.65?!?! And I thought it was spensive when I cant find it on sale now for less than 2.20 a gallon! :shocked2:

That's what your tax dollars get you, via farm subsidies, for better or worse.

That said, $2.20 a gallon is awesome, around here you won't find a gallon under $3.50.
