In search of one preferably 45 cal. Flintlock
Just watched a guy on the news hit a bear twice with double "O" at point blank range and still barely escaped into his house to reload before the bear retreated.
That's a big powerful and emotional creature to try and take down with a .45 with maybe 30 seconds to reload (if you're that good)

Scammers and crooks make me angry:mad:. I've heard of that one. I hope someone catches the scoundrel and presses charges that stick.

I know this thread is in the Classifieds, but it seems to have turned into a general discussion. The OP may get lucky submitting a "wanted" post as he did, and I wish him the best, but I think the surest way to get a righteous "Southern Bear Pistol" is to get a custom build.

I was smitten with these guns a couple of years ago and was unable to find what I wanted. I read the story of Mont Plott, the greatest of the mountain bear hunters, and his hounds, and I saw the old photo of his bear pistol, which is still in existence:

I made contact with a Plott descendant, who kindly provided some additional information about the gun, and I then submitted the information I had to Mr. John Bergmann, with the request that he duplicate the original. This is the result:

That is glare at tip of the forend, not a ding.

This has an eleven-inch .47 caliber swamped Hoyt barrel with (I think) a 1:16 twist, and seven grooves. That's a Davis Goulcher lock, similar to the original. Like the original, this pistol has a maple stock, stained very dark. The simple, single trigger breaks like glass. I'm pretty happy with this pistol.

For more on Southern Bear Pistols in general, you can check this thread, which ran about a year ago: Bear Pistol

It has lots of pictures of old and new guns that fit the description, flint and percussion.

Good luck in your quest! I wish you all success!

45 cal is fine to make noise & smoke as that big Grizz rears up and looks down on you!
But to bring the odds more favorable, bump up the volume to 58 cal and up.
I am always amazed at the "Titles" given to these old pistols. I sure want me a
"Bear" pistol---not a squirrel or woodchuck pistol. Just kidding. What goes on here
is the marketeers selling to the Alpha males---we need the ultra magnum sounding
BP Pistol----and of course, that is what we buy.

As an Aussie who saw his "very own" Grizzly Bear in the Yukon 1977 (working with Canadian Army) my preference would be either an Air strike with at least 3 x F18 Aircraft; or at the minimum a .75 cal rifle with a 30 rd magazine.

I am planning a .58 cal pistol with a rice 13 in swamped barrel. Still deciding on stock shape and material , have some plain maple , ash or a colorful cherry. Already have the metal parts.

LOL!! Teeth of large predators don’t feel good but the claws are bad news!!

I have been hit up with these scams almost every single time I have posted a want to buy ad here in the past year or so.

There is an epidemic of online fraud on these gun boards. Be VERY careful buying anything here, sad what it has come to. It wasn’t nearly this bad pre-virus.
I have a open want to buy add for an original side-by-side shotgun. I had a response to it this morning that looks fishy!

Old Greenie perfectly fit the profile of a typical scammer, new guy, joined in November, had about seven posts all of no substance. Pretty easy to spot. If you google that phone number you will see that he haunts several other gun boards. This piece of crap will be back on here under another name , be vigilant

On a happier note here's a bear pistol I built, 14 inch 50 cal cut down rifle barrel. Hand forged trigger guard. No intentions of ever shooting a bear with it, just a cool pistol to play with.

That Grizzly scared the living excrement out of me....literally, I was out on the perimeter of our Camp taking "a dump" (plastic bag mode) and heard the noise behind me; turned and saw the huge monster up on his hinds sniffing the air only about 20 to 30 yards from me.
