So somehow or other I've got some lard/grease/tallow/whatever you call it from some ground beef we cooked for dinner a few nights ago. It's actually really clean; no gristle or weird stuff in it, just very white. Can I use this just the way it is for lube do you guys that make your own animal-based lubes use additives? Just curious, since I pretty much have only used spit or bore-butter type stuff.

It can be used but you need to purify it by putting it in a pan with a few inches of water and bringing it to a boil, this will take any salt or other impurities out, let it cool then skim the clean tallow off the top. Also it can turn rancid so keep it cool and sealed tight, good luck

I was going to say go ahead as long as there is no salt in it.

Be really, really careful when boiling fat and water together. It can spatter very easily if you don't watch out.

Just my opine, but If contains salt, just use copious amounts of water when cleaning, which one should do anyway with real black.
