Spent the last five days out in 2C here in PA chasing deer with my .54 Woodsrunner. I took a nice doe with my Colonial in.50 last year and I was hoping for a repeat. I tagged a nice buck in archery season so I was looking to put some meat in the freezer. I have the rifle zeroed 2” high at 50 yards with a 100gr charge of FFFg and a .530 ball and .015” pillow ticking patch.
The weather was challenging. There was already a good amount of snow on the ground and it snowed Thursday through today basically. Saturday we had a mix of rain and snow. Saw a few deer as we pushed out some woods around the property Friday and Saturday. Didn’t coordinate well on one drive and 20 or so deer got past the group and didn’t present any opportunities for anyone. My buddy missed the same deer twice about 75 yards away while trying to thread a ball through some branches of white pine on another push. That deer was having no thoughts of giving him a third chance. Sunday brought a pile of snow and at sunrise this morning it was still coming down sideways and up to the top of my shins so we called it a season and packed it up.
Pretty good time for all of us and everyone had a great time. My brother learned that if flash pan powder gets wet it won’t ignite. Lol. I found I need to do a little more work on my ram rod as it swelled up a little and was hard to pull out or put back in the gun. A bit of 320 should do the job. My rifle fired off easily ant the end of each day easily, even after a few hours in a steady cold rain. I use a cows knee and reprime every 20-30 minutes while picking my vent hole.
