horn was a freebee from my butcher years ago, i boiled it and pulled core with a screw. then it sat around on my shelf for four years till i needed a horn that could carry alot of powder.....double navy arms 12 gauge made me finish it.

lathe was a rescue from my father inlaws barn, a craftsman from the 60's. usted but in good shape, only missing motor, live center and chuck. all in $120 had me in a workable machine.

The Forge was built with an old brake drum, a plate part from a broken hay bale chopper, and some 1 1/2 " scrap pipe. then i couple a hairdryer to it above the cleanout for a blower.

Works really well, and the charcoal is free and effortless out of my outdoor woodstove! catch it during a damper closed period, shovel into a barrel, put the lid on tight to cut off the air......viola, free charcoal!

thanks for looking! (first horn and first hawk/first time using a lathe/trying blacksmithing.......i was pretty happy)

Nice rail road spike hawk and nice simple horn. I am having computer problems or I would say more. :idunno:

If anyone wants a tuturial on the forge i will go through details, but it was really simple. all told about an hour to construct (arc/mig welder and torch/metal saw required)

in the first pic of the forge you can see the hawk sitting on the side of forge table, as i banged on some rod to practice squaring off round stock and thought about how to make the hole better on the hawk. lots of trial and error on that one, but eventually got it done.

The lathe is in my basement, which is a huge work in progress and will soon (by the end of the winter) be my woodshop/bowbuilding area. There is a bandsaw just behind and to the right of it that will be the centerpiece!

thanks for looking!

Keep on hammerin' the iron. Nothin' better than the satisfaction derived from knowing you can do it yourself.LOL It's even better knowing you can make things from salvaged material. :hatsoff:

On the powder horn only tip is made to open right like a plug the other side is closed solid?

Nice workable forge and hawk wouldnt mind hearing about your bow building sometime

Ratslayer. Yes the spout is the only part that opens.....i actaully learned that next time when i make the butt on the lathe to make it much wider and sand down for flush fit. Not perfect this go arounda
Hunter. You can see some if my bow building in
Primitive archer. Volume 17 . 3 rd edition. My bow was cover story that month

Also while im sharing.....if you google keith gibson season four of top shot on the history channel you will see my ugly mug :) the new season aires this valentines day at ten pm.
