I've learned on this site that all powder is not created equal (ie. Swiss). What about round balls...are they all the same or is there a better one for hunting? I have Speer round balls now.

As long as they are made from pure or near pure lead they will work. Some people like to use harder cast balls for tougher game. You have to try different balls to see how your rifle shoots them. It may shoot pure lead balls great but put a ball cast from wheel weights in it and accuracy could go out the door. Experiment. That's the fun part.

IMO, Hornady and Speer are the top of the heap in the commercial swaged ball industry...Hornady is always my choice for hunting...I've shot the occasional box of Speer in my same rifles zeroed with Hornady's and they were equal in all respects...but for some reason Speer's run a couple dollars a box more than Hornady so I stay with Hornady.

When just range plinking cans & steel targets on Saturdays I shoot the least expensive balls I can find as they're perfect for 25 & 50 yard targets like that.

I've shot and hunted with Speer, Hornady and hand cast. To be honest, I don't see any difference other than the swaged balls tended to be a little more consistant, accuracy wise. They all worked identically on game.

Hey Guys
Yep hand cast are the most satisfing, and I do enjoy shooting my own... however Hornady's round ball are the most true..
my best regards Loyalistdawg
