Check your area for a Tandy leather goods or similar type retail store, they often sell small left over cuts of heavy leather that work well for making a sheath.

I got some leather for a knife sheath I made at Hobby Lobby. It was only about 3.50 for a bag full of scraps. the bag has enough leather to make a couple of sheaths or other small projects.

I have been happy with justleather.com
A freind recommended them to me and they were most helpful, answered all of my dumb questions along the way.
