I have a Pietta Remington 1858 Army and it groups pretty well, but 6 inches to the left. I'm thinking of filing the right side of the rear grove to move the group over. Is there a better way to do this?

I'd be more inclined to take some off the side of the front sight (the opposite side to the rear sight). That way it would be easier to either replace or rebuild (JB Weld works good) should you take too much off. Another option would be to remove the current front sight & have the barrel cut for a sight with a dovetail base.

Take it to a gunsmith and have him index the barrel so's to move the sight to the left (tighten the barrel up) some.Won't take much. The sight replacement will work also if the barrel won't tighten any further.

see if the barrel is indexed right to the frame. if it is off as in not screwed in all the way that is the easiest to fix. like was stated just screw the barrel in a little tighter. you mite have to take the barrel off and stome off a burr.
if the barrel is in the right index then you could put in a dovetail front sight like some have all ready.

Also, make sure its not you. Right handed shooters have a tendency to push the trigger resulting in shots going left, so shoot for group from the bench before you go hacking on anything.

Six inches is way off, are you sure you aren't pulling the shots? I get into that habit once in awhile. My group is tight but to the left. I fix the sights but then the group starts moving left again. Have someone else shoot the gun.
If you have to make a change- the front sight would be best. You can always change it later- once you start messing with the hammer- that's not reversible.

Now that you have all of this good advice lets ask the obvious things needed to make any recommendation.

1. What is your range?

2. Are you shooting from a bench across sandbags?

3. How big are the groups?

I started out testing the revolver at 25 yards from a bench position. I test all my revolvers at this distance for competition .This pistol shoots to the left even off of the bench by about 6 inches. I'm pretty confident that I'll pulling straight through but I'll do more work before I change anything on the gun.

At the same time I started shooting the Pietta I bought a Traditions's Trapper and I have no trouble keepings the shots centered with this pistol. I do like the single shot a bit more, seems to fit my hand better, but I've always been a revolver shooter with smokeless so I want the BP to work as well.

Before I go changing anything else I'll change charge weights and see if that brings them in at all. I'm currently using 20 gr of FFF Swiss with a .454 ball. A few more things to check in the loading data to see what brings them in, but thanks for all the advise so far. I now have more ideas to play with.
