I considered all these kinds of things before buying a handmade " hurricane " style lamp. It is a wood frame, holds a candle, which is then surrounded with a hurricane glass dome, and then a top slides down over 4 pins to hold the glass in place. It was the only lamp I have seen that was truly safe to leave unattended for any length of time. Some are made with glass windows, and a wooden framed glass door that opens to reach and light the candle. Those are okay, but I don't like the hole in the top being centered under the leather strap that hangs the thing. On mine, the neck of the glass is long enough that the heat dissipates before it gets up where the strapping can be burned by the candle flame, or rising heat. Mine was made by another club member, and I was happy to help support his efforts. If it were to break, the glass dome can be purchased at most lighting centers, or hobby stores.

Someone's lodge burned up at Friendship one year, and the people barely got out alive. Friends of mine where camped nearby overnight, and told us about the fire when they returned. Everyone in the primitive camp was shaken by the near disaster. They passed the hat to help the couple buy a new lodge and replace some of the things they lost. The people were truly grateful for everyone's kindness. I made sure my lodge is fireproofed( Makes it burn slower and brighter! :shocked2: :haha: :rotf: ) when I bought it several years later, but I still worry about fires and use a pit for my camp fires all the time.

I have seen winds come up in only a few minutes blowing ashes and embers all around. Only our precaution of putting firewood stacks close to the pit, and wind breaks of other items to build a wall around the pit kept much of the area from burning, along with my lodge. The fireproofing made the embers burn out before they did more than make little stains on the outside of my lodge.

Andy, Where did you find the plans for the Betty lamp that is in your pictures? I have been wanting to make one and have not been able to find any plans.

Hi Andy,

same question for me, I just bought some tin and I would be interested by some plans.
