I've long wanted to build a large-bore hunting rifle, and all this underhammer talk has me thinking about a poor man's Zephyr. But who is building barrels in .62, .66, .69 or .72 with a Forsythe twist for round ball and heavy charges? Green Mountain seems to stop at .58, and I heard Oregon Barrel Company is months beind. Anyone else building an accurate but affordable barrel without a months-long waiting list?

Try Riley Smith at LongHammack Barrel. His number is 352-748-7373. He builds lots of special order barrels. He builds a good shooting barrel. It is what I had put on my personal rifle (octagon-round 40 rifled). He builds .62's for us all the time.

Bill no matter who you buy it from, it will take a while to get a 65+ caliber. In a tapered barrel of course. I think Oregon's last quote was about 90 days.......that is quite quick. :shocked2:

If you need any helpful advice, send ma an e-mail.

I have all kinds. :rotf:

You might try Jim Carpenter, he has done a few big ones. He bought out Orion Rifle barrel co. several years back. # 208-245-3693.

Ive forgot what Riley charges or how big , but his turn around time for me has been about 6 weeks, if! he has the blank in stock and isnt out hunting :rotf: Great old guy to work with and his price is right. As is John Ts when he can get ya in :) :rotf: Fred :hatsoff: JT will try about anything in MLing right now.

Did you see the Long Hammock Rifle Barrel - 1" X .62 Caliber X 36" Length at Dixie Gun Works?

John, Thanks for the number, I have several of Jerry's barrels.....glad to see someone is using his tooling. :applause:

You might try Ed Rayl - I have a 75 rifled barrel from him. His times are long but then he never promises short and gives you long. GC

Long Ham is Smith, dont worry about the 62s I put a patched ball and up to 150grs 2f thru them and havent had a problem one. Ive only got some barrels the last 2 yrs or so from him but I was recomended I guess yad call it, hes the only barrel maker that has thrown in the doves and breech plug, nipple hole drilled all ready to go for my H+As and gets them out in 30 days ( the trick is to ask for a barrel the size he working on then, ut he can come up with 1 1/8 and bigger kind of quick-30 days) really a great guy when "HE" gets to know ya. Fred :hatsoff:
