I know people that shoot and do not reenact. Some have only a hundred $$ in gun and supplies.

I know people that reenact and do not shoot that have about the same $$$ investment.

Where does one start and stop counting?

Do I get to count the cost of the education that got me started down this track?

Do I count the $$$ I have lost due to turning down career opps that would interfere with my reenacting?

Do I count the cost of remodeling the garage into "reenacting central"?

How about all of the tools for gunbuilding?

Do I count all of the vehicles purchased simply to haul my camp.

Do I count the diference in gas cost if I drove a Geo Metro rather than an F-150 or Cherokee?

During the last 20 years I have probably dropped somewhere between $250,000 & $500,000 on all phases of shooting and reenacting.

Now, what did I get in return?

Do I place value on the times when the only reason I felt like staying alive was because there was an event comming up in a week or two?

I never had to bail my kids out of juvinile detention. They were always way too busy getting ready for the next event! They both still have hobbies that keep them sane and occupied, their minds alert and open.

How much is the look on my grandkids faces worth when they come to visit me in camp?

How much was it worth to meet one of the greatest women in the world at a reenactment camp?

How much is it worth to see the look on peoples' faces when you show them your wedding pictures and everyone is in 18th century costume?

This is a lifestyle I embrace not a seperate factor in life that I can calculate.

See signature below.

Over 20 years, <frantic button pushing on calculator> Holy Smoke, that's over $2k a month

Let me see, this month a Lantaka 400, some gunpowder 216 and a shotgun 1380 = 1996

YOU'RE WORSE THAN ME

Hey, I counted some extras, like the cost of graduate school (one thing led to another) and loss of income due to time spent in education, and between what I could have done and what I actually earned!

And I have this problem where I keep building guns and never get rid of any of them! If I sold something I could cut down on gun parts costs!

Actual reenactment and shooting expenses are probably not much more than $1,000 per month! During the winter months I can trim it down to $800!

Now that is some investment. >$2,000 a month average over a 20 year span.

Impressive!

What profession are you in that supports that much investment for Hobby?

As this is a public forum, that can be perused by my wife, I will honestly say, I only spent $50.00 dollars last year sweety !:peace: :hmm:

Well this year was a big year for me.
1 TVM and 2 customs BIG $$$$ wont say!
But normally about 500 - 750/yr
Mostly powder.

Since Musketman claims he is not keeping any official record of how we respond to this question, and is not part of the IRS, I will respond with the exact figure: $I don't know!$ Some years it is a lot, others much less. Did I build a new rifle or shoot the old ones? Did I need a new pair of shoes or a new can of powder? What did my wife want for her birthday? After I get the important stuff bought, I get what money is left. Good example: My wife turned -- this month. So she got a special gift. I got the pleasure of her company. Shooting sports got nothing! My birthday is coming up in a couple of months. I will turn -- this year. I hope my shooting time will increase.

I figure that I spent close to $2,000 over the past 12 months.

Will be close to that over the next year.

:hmm:...not sure I want to get into posting dollar ...plus, we're having our 38th next month so the Chief-of-Staff must be OK with it too!

:redthumb:

Congratulations. A notable achievement.

Hmmmmmmmm, this is a tough question......let's see, gotta crank out the 'ole calculator......push a few buttons, add this to that......gettin close......here it is.

I spent a couple of million dollars give or take a couple of million dollars!

A year? Probably about four hundred, about 40 bucks a month give or take.

It's all my 'mad money' expense........if the little lady found out she'd be mad!

I thought that (the "minimali$t" $port of) flyfi$hing was a potential money pit (and it i$!) - but for being a "primitive" type of activity, thi$ ha$ got to be the mo$st expen$ive hobby I've ever had! I'm finding out, a$ many of you know fir$t-hand, that thi$ "hobby" can become a life-$tyle. The po$$ibilie$ for $pending big $$$ are ENDLE$$ - gun$, canva$, ca$t & forged iron, gun$, linen, wool, gun$, tin, bra$$, gun$, accoutrement$, $hoe$, breeche$, we$kit, (not to mention cap with roof rack for the pickup truck), - oh, and did I mention gun$? Oh, and I also forgot petticoat$, $tay$, $hortgowns, (for Mrs. Mae$tro - not me). Oh yeah, and clothe$ for the Mae$tro kid$ a$ well. I gue$$ I'm ju$t $eeing dollar $igns everywhere becau$e thi$ month I $pent a $mall fortune with Tent$mith$!

I've gotten $o deep into thi$ that I $old $ome flyfi$hing equipment on eBay thi$ $pring and I really think I'm al$o going to $ell $ome of my modern gun$ to off$et the co$t$. Any time I get a chance to $hoot or hunt, I alway$ want to use that opportunity to $hoot the flinter$ anyhow!

Similar thing happened last year...realized I had reached a comfortable place shooting and hunting just flintlocks and finally came to terms that I wouldn't be hunting centerfires much any more...began selling them off...if my Wife has to sell them after I'm gone, she'll be taken advantage off...figured I'd get started now since I'm not using them...will keep some special ones to pass down but the rest are on the chopping block...already sold all but a couple percussions too

as far as my better half knows, we dont spend much. she doesn't take into account the farm, the horses (she had to have after we went to the eastern a few years ago), the trailer (to haul horses), the tractor (to spread the horse poo) the 3/4 ton truck to pull the trailer and haul grain and hay. the tack. the cart (don't ever put that before the horse). then the gear! soooo.... if you count the lifestyle that goes along with the hobby, every damn dime you earn goes into it. :what:

BUT WORTH EVERY ONE!!!!

Whether one shoots or doesn't shoot, joins a reenactment group or relives history on there own It doesn't matter how correct you are, what your weapons are, if you make or by your leather, have a wooden handled 3 prong fork or one of bone or ivory. The point is not about reenacting it's about living history how, when, where, and to whatever degree of accuracey or fantacy you want to live it. No wrong no right. unless you choose to be in a reenactment which is like that. If you don't want that stay away from it. And in here if everyone would consider that no one would come down on anyone anymore, imagine no more destructive argueing. Anyway it's a way of life like you said.

...reminds me of a little quote... :haha:

"My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it." - Koos Brandt

:winking:

Oops! It's gone up again, but how could I resist?
