it's funny when you watch a western movie and see an airplane in the sky far of in the distance. i always felt that the Carwright's should've minded there own beeswax! all the time spent riding and bother'n other folks, well who was working the farm. and anybody that has ever tried to work with a sixgun on you're hip know's it's just in the way.
When my sweety goes to work and the neighbor is not around and I am going to be out here in the country by myself I strap on my 1851 and go about my day.
Yes it tends to get in the way on occasion, but mainly when I want to sit down or use the bathroom. Most of what I do around here it isn't in the way.
I garden with it, when I clean the chicken coop, when I do house work. It is a bit of a safety blanket. The idea of being 30 minutes from law enforcement and being a girl by herself in the woods without a pistol is unapealing. There have been break ins around this area the last few years....
So far I have only had to pull it on a coyote but it is handy. If there is a coyote at my birds I don't have time to run for the shot gun if I want to save the chicken.

just watched an episode of rawhide with robert blake playin' an army deserter. he was armed with a "flintlock" pistol with a trapdoor action. also recently saw a movie with tom laughlin(played billy jack) who had a colt six-shooter that would fire about 30 times without reloading.

Actually they use a combination of .45-70's and early Springfields patterned after the French.
Their "scotch bonnets" are actually Glengarry hats. Now the Glengarry dates to 1794, but the modern one that folds flat is not the same. I was told the movie producers assumed that the Glengarry "bonnet" was what Kenneth Roberts meant when he wrote about "Scotch Bonnets" for Rogers' Rangers, when back then the correct hat was called a tam-o-shanter, not a bonnet. Hence the screw up.
At least the Indian village was a mix mash of log dwellings and long houses, with "tee pee" structures for storing corn, for in 1939-1940 the tendency was to alway put Indians in plains style lodges.

When I used to live and work on an 8,000 acre cattle ranch by myself with no phone I used to wear an 1858 Remington. I switched to a 1911 when I shot a wild pig in the head with it at 10 yards and the ball just flattened out on its skull. After reading what I have read on this forum I would simply have upped the load and gone with a conical. But I certainly needed it, and used it, and felt better carrying it. I was completely alone up there.
