Hello everyone, today I tried out Birchwood Casey's brass black and was very happy with the way my brass turned out.
It has a bronze color that really looks great on my CVA Hawken, my stock is a medium walnut so it contrasts just right together.
My question is how to make it last, does anyone know what I could put on it that would help preserve the color or am I just going to have to re-do it every so ofter.

I sometimes do a light coat of the Brass Black on new brass. I re-apply coats until it is dark enough to have a little patina that looks right and dulls any shine. I make a point of handling the brass with my bare hands after that whenever I have the rifle out and that seems to keep the patina where I want it.

FWIW, I once applied some cold blue to bright/polished brass on one T/C I had, and it resulted in good-wearing, good-looking dull case colors.

If I want to age brass, I rub it with a dirty cleaning patch. Instant patina.

Same here. I tried the BC brass black, but for my eye it looked as though I'd used a black magic marker on the brass. Ick. It also wasn't nearly so durable as the patina resulting from rubbing with a cleaning patch and black powder fouling.

It certainly depends on the "look" you want, and if that's blackened steel, carry on. Reducing that black to some level of patina is too fiddly to me compared to simply rubbing with a fouled cleaning patch and waiting for the results to develop, with the fouling patina lots more durable.

Clear laquer made for metal hand rails on steps. This is a specific laquer formulated to take a beating from constant contact, so it holds up well protecting whatever finish is under it.

Haven't personally used it over brass black, but did use it over heat bluing and it worked well.
