Does anyone know where I can order birdshot by the pound or two? Even 5 lbs. The smallest quantities I can find are 10 lbs, and I'd like to do tests with different shot sizes to see how they perform.

You can get small amounts from Amazon. You don’t save much though. Lead shot is kind of like Costco shopping, you can get a pound from the Piggly Wiggly at $10 or 50 pounds at Costco for $20. I think it’s because their customer base is reloaders, so they cater to bulk buying.

I think all amazon has is #7.5 shot, but I'll consider them!

Had the same issue. Bought a cheap 100 round pack of Federals from Wal-Mart and pried them all open, removing the #6 shot from the hulls. You can save the primed hulls for later. Load them with couscous to shoot carpenter bees with etc.

Each shell has an ounce of shot. Ends up being over 6 lbs of shot. I normally shoot about an ounce load so that’s 100 shots right there, enough to do lots of patterning and a whole bunch of hunting.

Only cost about $25.

Ask around for people who reload shotgun shells. There's a bunch of them around these parts. They'd probably be glad to sell or give you small amounts. Ditto on the yard and estate sales. Just make sure the bag is tied shut! (I know about this!) I've also picked up a lot of lead in the form of dive weights and tin for cast boolets in the form of 50/50 solder rolls. My best score to date has been nine 14 1/2 lb blocks of the hospital radiation lead, 42 lbs of linotype, and 6 lbs of Cerrosafe all for 50 bucks.
