Birdseye Maple
Seems most people either love it or don't like it at all.
Not sure what side of the fence I'm on.
What say you?
5" Blade A-2 steel, Lightly aged
4' Handle Birdseye Maple slabs, Tung Oil finish
Iron pins

Hello

I've found out that darker stains look better on Birdseye maple. I will send you the picture of my hawken with custom Birdseye stock. Pm me the email again please, in case I won't find you in my correspondence from last time. But darken stain brings up the colors nicely and the come out like Roundball's Early Virginia stock color. The picture with the deer.
Overall, I love this and everyone of your knives! Just a good ole quality workmanship and would take this knife even if it was stocked in pine ;)

Yes I have been staining it dark for quite a while myself and prefer it darker, but the one pictured above is the second one I have made for a buddy of mine, He went nuts over the first one and asked for a second one. Was just wondering what others thought of it.

Nice knife! But I gotta say I don't care much for Birdseye without some sort of stain. I like the second one posted much better.

Both are real nice I lean toward the darker one myself. Maybe you could try one one with a lighter stain or just a sample to see what that looks like

I have a birdseye stock on one of my centerfires, and it looks real good with the dark blue of the metal. No stain.

Hi Mike
That is beautifull! I have a friend in Arkansas that had a Hawken style with a Birdseye stock and I always thought it was wayyyy too much and did not like it. He called what your picture seems to show..."Shell-Flame" maple? Whatever it is...it sure looks great.
Macon

I love it to look at. But working birds eye maple can be a gamble. The 'eyes' can pop out, often just as the project is nearing completion. My friend, a master gun builder, who made my Jaeger refuses to work with it.
So, congrats on nice looking items.
BTW, I agree, a little more stain would bring out the eyes with more contrast.

Rather than a stain I think that bird'seye maple would look great with an ammonia fume process. This slowly darkens the wood and you can stop when it gets to where you like it..............watch yer top knot.............
