I had cause to discharge a flinter using a cigarette lighter yesterday.

Today my finger has black blisters, oozing black puss where the side blast caught me.

Is that normal? It doesn't hurt or anything, just a bit unsightly

No, it's quite abnormal to fire a flintlock with a cigarette lighter.

The black is burnt powder/fouling particles driven into your skin. I'm guessing the "pus" is actually not infection (yet) but is the watery lymph you body produces to concentrate moisture and white blood cells. For a small area burn, apply some triple-antibiotic to gauze and wrap it lightly - so that air can reach the wound. Knowing the monsters you shoot, if the skin is charred (third degree) get yourself to a doctor. Burns are very suseptable to infection.

And remember: taking medical advice over the Internet is right up there with maximum load recommendations.

Yup - what Stumpkiller says - its powder particles driven into your skin. There is a name for this in the homicide investigation world; we call it "stippling". The presence of, the degree of, or lack of stippling around a gunshot wound of a homicide victim gives an indication of the distance between the shooter and the victim at the point the shot was fired. Knowing the distance between shooter and victim is often a critical bit of information. This effect is seen even with modern powders. At close range I have seen powder flakes driven into skin a full 1/16th of an inch with higher powered handguns! The properties of black powder would only accentuate the stippling effect in my estimation. As for that lighter trick - get yourself a CO2 discharger - a lot safer!

Squire, about 5 years ago, I had an accidental discharge while on the firing line..the flinter was at waist level but being brought to my left shoulder...I was wearing a Tee shirt as it was a hot day...I now have an interesting tatoo on my right bicep...from the 20 or so pieces of burnt powder Iwas not able to dig out...you may have polka dot fingers from now on...Hank

Good thing you didn't read the stuck ball / lighter fluid thread...

No pictures please, but we are wondering how you typed this...

Heal fast O'Robin of England...

I was on my way home from the farm during deer season. I had planned to stop at another farm for an evening hunt on the way home. I had removed the cap from my gun for the trip. It would not go off when I tried to clear it and reload it for the hunt. I popped three caps and no luck. I only had three caps left, and I needed them for the hunt. I pulled the clean out screw and used a lighter to set it off. I only got a little flash burn out of it. I had a ball puller. It was safe and warm at home!

Ouch, guess ya won't be sayin' Wanna flick my bic again any time soon. :: Sure hope that don't feel as bad as it looks. Ok, i just noticed the date on that pic. Guess it ain't really your hand. That Stumpkiller, ya just never know about that fella. ::

Must be a Stumpkiller boo boo. He didn't want us to know about the time he set off a flinter with a paper book match.

Close. We were in a gift shop in Myrtle Beach and I picked out a little 6" topless hula dancer and said to THE ADMIRAL "I think this would look good on my dash-board."

Before I realized what I had done she hit me full in the unprotected hand with a unchecked treacher glare from both eyes. Vaporized the hula figurine. Melted 17 pink flamingos on the wall behind me and deafened 12 hermit crabs on the counter beside us.

Well, that'll teach ya now won't it. Real good thing it were just a figurine and not the REAL thing or you most likely wouldn't have any hand left at all. Not to mention some unmentionable body parts.

HAH! and double HAH!

And they call them the 'weaker' sex! :shake: :haha: :haha:

Squire: As Stumpy says, get your butt to the doctor. Take your flash fried finger with you, he may be able to do something about it too.

Seriously, you don't want to be PC by getting blood poisoning or worse.

Stumpy: I thought that it was only my wife that had "The Glare" ! This world is a lot scarier knowing that any woman might be able to do things like that.
The last time I suggested she might have done something wrong, I walked around with a bad sunburn for two weeks and that was from only a quick flash from her left eye. :shocking:

Boyhowdy! I'm sure glad she goes with you and not me. I'd a-been toast a loooooong time ago. :shake:

Squire,
One of the leading causes of death from bullet wounds during the American Civil War was infection. One of the leading causes for infection was black powder residue. So, please, go to the Doctor. This forum needs your input and it is hard to type with one hand.
