I was talking to a couple of guys I shoot with, and they are planning a Caribou hunt in Canada in September. The firearm of choice will be traditional flintlocks loaded with patched round ball and BP. I asked if they had checked on what is involved in taking BP across the border and was rewarded with couple of "We think..." answers. Being the wonderful human being I am, I sent an email to the Canada Border Services Agency asking for information I could relay to them. If their government agencies are anything like ours, the answer will be written so as to be unintelligible. Does anyone out there reading this have any personal experience in crossing into Canada with a flintlock and black powder?

Superflint,
There are no restrictions in Canada on Flintlocks of any type.I'm guessing your flying to Newfoundland or Quebec.A phone call to your airline should clear up any questions about transportation. It's legal in Canada to Fly with Firearms. They just need to be "delt with" properly.
As for the powder in guessing they are going to tell you to leave it home.Any outfitter worth his weight SHOULD be able to Round up some Black Powder if given plenty of notice.
Hope this helps!

I grew up on the border, good luck getting GOEX or any other "REAL" black powder in to CANADA
:cursing:
flintin' fer boo, that would be a trip worth tellin' the gran kids a bout
I truly don't know the laws governing our brethern to the north of us but I would find out if you can UPS powder to your outfitter. Expect LOTS!!! of hoop jumpin' an he said she said.
Educate your self with the laws!! than when you get sombody that says " well... I don't think"
You will have all your ducks covered

It is illegal to fly with black powder. You may be able to fly with blackpowder cartridges, but I don't think so. Your gun can fly, but no blackpowder at all. If you are driving, as long as you have the proper paperwork, you should not have any problems at the border. I have never crossed the border, but know others that have.

I dare say it would be illegal to fly bp into any country.
GOEX is sold everywhere in Canada, since there is Muzzleloader clubs all accross the nation. :v

As far as I know, you cannot fly with any BP because it is classified as an explosive. I have heard that even BP residue can cause a problem with the bomb dogs and sniffer machines.

If you are driving, you should be OK. Being a Canuck, I have purchased BP on the gun friendly side of the border (that's your side :v ) and brought it home. No problem getting across with 2lbs at the NY/Watertown crossing (Thousand Islands brige). I declared it and paid a little duty, but they didn't really seem to care about what it was.

1 or 2lb. should be enough for a whole group on a short hunting trip, so try at least bringing that much. You can find the stuff on this side of the border, but it is NOT a common item at all so don't bet your trip on finding some. When you can find a gun shop, some have it and some don't. Pyrodex is easier to find here.

I hope that helps. If you need any help on this side, feel free to PM me. If you are coming into Canada at Detroit, I can give you directions to a shop that would have BP. Or, worse come to worse, you might just drive close enough to me that I can hand off a few pounds as you go by. :haha: (assuming you are headed for Quebec?)

It seems to make a big difference where you cross. Here on the left coast it can be a real pain just to cross.I used to go to some rendys in BC but about 3-4 years ago it became such a trial I quit. The US crossing people are as bad if not worse than the Canadians. They just don't seem to understand the rules,I very nearly lost a flintlock on both sides.I took particular pains to contact the Canadian consulate in Seattle and the US authorities because of 9/11.Something gets lost between the rules those people quoted me and the border. It must be me, but I really get peaved when I do everything that officials tell me to do then have some officious jerk try to run me up a tree.

I grew up on the Quebec border with famley on both sides. We used to "POP" into Canada all!! the time for gas, beer, etc.. This was in the 80's and I was in high school. Also spent a ton of time runnin' the woods up there huntin' and flyfishing the biggest brook trout you have ever seen. Never had a problem going across the border with my trusty 30-30 in the gun rack. Now because of the pain in the @$$ it's has become with border patrol that are full of :bull:
I won't go there. I have turned down lots of guiding jobs from people who want me to show them good hunting and fishing in Quebec.
That is loss of revenue for Canada.
I really miss it up there, I have been out of contact for so long it hurts. I am sure there is lots of canucks that may disagree ( not my famley to north that is ) And no offence to the Baron because we are side by each to close apart on this maby
But I wish old Bennidict Arnold an the greenmtnboys had been able to to take Quebec out of the hands of the redcoats.
I would prabably live in Quebec or BC right now.
:hatsoff:

Baron...here in the US I can order a case or two from a Goex distributor and have it delivered to my front porch in a couple days.

Was wondering:

Do you have a Goex distributor in Canada you can get deliveries from?

If not, can you order from a US Goex distributor and have it delivered to your residence in Canada?

roundball... as far as I know, there is no Goex distributor up here. The last pound I bought "locally" cost me $30 (Canuck bucks, but that still hurts :haha: ) and the shop owner said getting the powder to him cost a fortune is hazardous shipping costs.

(as an interesting aside that same shop owner said he almost lost his shipment of .50 muzzleloaders at the border, because the Canadian government thought .50 must mean .50 BMG and weren't going to let any heavy artillery into the country. :shake: )

Greenmtnboy... if you would like Quebec, please just come on up and take it. We'll leave the gate open for your boys. :rotf:

Can I bring some real VT maple products? :rotf:
what do you think Baron who makes the best syrup you or us there :hatsoff:

"...$20 bucks a can Canadian $$$..."
Do you happen to know the exchange rate of our two currencies off the top of your head?

rb... I think right now $1 Canadian buys about 0.85 US. So, $30 Canadian is about $25.50 US.

Greenmtnboy... I had real maple syrup on my pancakes just this morning. Local Ontario... very tastey. As for who makes the best surup, I don't know if I've ever had VT syrup. If you want a serious answer, we'd have to get into a deep discussion about grades throughout the season, climate, etc. For a non-serious answer, I'd say my favorite is whatever we have in the fridge. :haha:

Hey Baron,
Oops...I guess I told you a lie.It wasen't $20 after all....It was $18.50 :haha:

Here the slip where I bought 5 cans of 3f last July.

I'm really lucky here...a Goex case price delivered to my door is $10.25/can...only way I can afford to shoot so much

That is a good price but even at my price it's still cheaper than shooting any kind of cartridge gun.

Halftail... a photcopy of the receipt? Sheesh... you just gotta rub it in, don't ya? :haha:

I am close to a source in Watertown, NY area so I buy my stuff there now. I think I paid $15 USD for my last can (about $18 Canadian).
