I have been fortunate enough to take quite a few Gobblers
with a PRB in both 40 Cal. and 45 Cal. I have also killed them with shotguns and centerfire (223). The thrill of calling them in and shooting them with the PRB in both flint and perc. is as good as it gets. I try to shoot Squirrels in the head but with Turkeys I am not so choosy. Most of the Gobblers I have shot have been hit in the "V" of the breast bone, above the beard and below the neck this shot kills like lighnting. Dont be afraid to try- you will probably get hooked like I did.
Good Luck,
SJ

I have been fortunate/lucky, enough to take 2 gobblers with a PRB. Both with a .54 caliber because all my guns then were .54. In fact, they still are. That is why I'm planning my next building project to be a .40, I need something more suited for targets, squirrels, turkeys and such.
Now about the .54 PRB and its effectiveness on Turkeys. I have never felt undergunned! I have not yet been attacked by an evil tempered wounded bird.
In all things to do with hunting I defer to Robert Ruarks saying "Use enough gun".

We can't use a ball in Indiana. Has to be shotgun/smoothbore. Goin' tomorrow with my smoothie, flintlock I might add. 1/2 oz #7 1/2's, 1.25 oz #6's over 50 grs fffg. Hope he'll come in this time. Need him about 25yds away and he's mine, ::I hope.

Flint shooter- mixing shot size is interresting,I read some place that it was common years ago. A lot of old shot snakes were found with mixed size shot. 50 gr. fff seams a bit light. Just watched a jake walk across the field behind my house.Rocky /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi guys - I'm new here, so I don't meant to butt in. I saw this thread and couldn't resist bragging. I just switched this year to huntng my turkeys with a muzzleloader. After a long search I found a c.1830's original percussion fowler in approx. 11ga. It's got a 30" barrel or so and is in pretty good shape, given the age. I was shown how to load it and used 80 gr. FFg, a fibre wad, 1 1/8oz #6 and a card over the shot (I was given overpowder cards to use over the shot, but didn't know it until recently - I'm still learning by leaps and bounds!). Anyway, I did a lot of patterning and decided on an absolute maximum range of 20 yards with my loading. I bagged a 20.3 pounder with 9 1/4" beard and 3/4" spurs. I took him at 13 steps, from a a group of 19 birds that were at my decoys. If I could figure out how to post a pic, I have lots! :haha:

Has anyone else had success yet? I love hearing other stories and seeing pics!
