I’m new also, just bought a ROA last month and a flintlock a couple weeks ago, and the guys here have been EXTREMELY helpful! I have been competing with modern firearms since 1974. Indoor bullseye (CF & RF) trap, IDPA, Steel Challenge, High Power Rifle, Vintage rifle, 3-gun, etc… I’m a bit older than you and lately I’ve just been shooting for fun. Either back yard or at the local club hanging out and wasting ammo very efficiently!

The reason I started down this path was to better enjoy the ride as opposed to just getting to the destination, so-to-speak. It is much slower, no cheaper, and a LOT more work, not to mention the clean-up to avoid gun decay. But I have the time, and I enjoy the extra work, it is something new, lots to learn, developing loads, techniques, new skills. Another world (sport, discipline) to conquer! I am having a blast! I am really looking forward to spring! (It’s frekin’ cold here now!!!!)

You can have lots of fun shooting modern firearms, it will require minimum effort, maintenance, cleaning, cost, and this is what almost all of the people I know do, for good reason. I still shoot them.

But if you like a challenge, looking for exploring and learning a completely new discipline, and have the time and patience, you just might find it is a lot of fun! It is not for everyone.

There is a halfway point. If you are not willing to take the full leap to muzzleloader, consider a BPCR (Black Powder Cartridge Rifle). I have a 1885 Winchester High Wall Creedmoor model in .45-70. It shoots like a modern firearm, extremely accurate, and easier to maintain.

After many years of futzing with BP, I’ve come to the conclusion that a flintlock in a small(ish) caliber is the most fun and more satisfying to shoot than any other. That’s just me, tho. If you’re into recoil that’ll rock your world, you might want to go with the bigger caliber rifles, but I prefer the .40 cal range. A .32 sounds like a pop gun to me, but .36 or .40 hits a sweet spot.

If you can swing the price tag, you sure can’t beat a Kibler SMR, in my opinion. The Rice barrels are surprisingly accurate, so that makes it worth the $ to me.

Just figure it out slowly, and ask lots of questions. Lots of knowledge on this site that’s ripe for the pickin’!

Somewhat interesting, for me anyway. I am pushing toward 63 years old. I started carrying firearms as a living in the Marine Corps at 18. After my discharge I did a 28 year LE career which centered primarily on SWAT, certified firearms instructor for over 25 years, you name it I’ve shot it (or something darn close to it), but have never fired anything black powder. I actually owned a Ruger Old Army for a while, but it sat in my safe for a year, so I let it go (which is killing me now). I’ve been a member of several firearms sites, but have left all of them because, to be honest, they bore the heck out of me, if not downright annoy me with all the banter about optics, front slide serrations, and how recent advances have made 9mm ammunition “almost” to .44 magnum (I’m being facetious). Anyway, here I am. Except for some Rumble videos and a few articles I am a black powder blank slate. I don’t currently own anything, and I am here to see whether I might. All this being said, at least there appears to be a shooting sport that seems somewhat intriguing.

I can't speak for you, but I find Black Powder intensely interesting along with the history intimately connected. Also, there's something about shooting BP that's a lot more fun than other types of shooting. I can't say what it is or why, it just is.

Is there anything that interests you most? Pistols, Revolvers, Muskets, Percussion Rifles, Breech loaders...? Cannons?

Thanks for the response. Regarding my interests, in center fire world it has always been predominantly, in this order, shotguns, pistols, rifles. I have been entertaining a keen interest in muzzle loading pistols. BP revolvers seem very cool, but I’m leery of the seemingly repetitive things I read about the initial work that needs to be done on most of them to bring them up to speed. I don’ t mind tinkering, but some folks “tinkering” is next level mechanics for me. The few shotguns I’ve looked at are very cool. I definitely entertain the idea of a rifle, muzzle and/or breech loader. Flintlocks are so foreign to me that they have not appeared on my radar screen thus far.
