Got a Traditions Crockett for Christmas. Finally got a chance to shoot it last weekend. Cleaned it with Ballistol and water. Been running a patch covered in Ballistol down the bore every day since. I get 2 black streaks from the same groove every day. I scrubbed till all the patches came out clean and the next day 2 black streaks again. Has anyone had this happen? I'm thinking it might just be some of the factory grease that didn't come out the first time I cleaned it.

Ballistol is ok for blackpowder cleaning but really, warm water and a little detergent is the best. Use the ballistol to clean the external parts and lock if you want and as a barrel rust preventative. Ballistol does weird stuff in my barrel so I stopped using it in there and reserve it for external uses.

What kind of weird stuff was it doing? I've heard it can gum up but haven't had it happen yet.

Run a bronze brush two or three times down the bore first with straight dish washing detergent on it to break loose any carbon and oils. After that do the pump in a bucket of water thing using a cleaning jag and patches till they come out clean. Patch dry and then oil,it's not rocket science.
