Black walnuts

I boil the hulls and nuts. I like it when they turn black. After boiling I have strained off the liquor and put in a bucket and for several years I used large trash cans. I always poured in several bottles of rubbing alcohol.
I have also pressed off the remains after boiling and have got some very good dye from that.
 
I use dried husks to give horns an antique color. Boil them and immerse the horns for about 15 or so minutes. All the work on the horn needs to be done before, carving, skrimshaw, etc. Gives a nice old looking brownish tone after lightly buffing.
