I think the style shown is late 1700's through the 1800's. Maybe @Rob M. will chime in with more accurate dates. But they are Trade Gun side plates.Good, interesting photo. Somebody more familiar with serpentine side plates might know the time period or what gun they would come from.
Do you recall who the original photographer was?I've seen that photo before and a later one taken in the 20th century of a old Blackfoot with the same type necklace. Maybe the same guy as an old man.

Pontiac in the 1750's admonished his warriors for getting "stoned" smoking kinickinic (sp?) .Ya, I see another post said a pipe but both the object and the expression (0r not lol) on his face look like it was some pretty good stuff.
