Getting back to the orignal question about a pattern, my ex made my first one, and some for others, by just folding a blanket around my rifle and safety pinned the blanket shut around the gun. She then cut out the piece allowing enough for seams. That gave her a pattern to work with. She sewed the thing together inside out, so that when it was turned right side out, there was a smooth seam. Later on, she began sewing folded ribbon into the seam, creating a zig-zaggy fringe effect. (Probably a post 1865 design.) Of course these were machine sewn, and done before the days when PCness was all the rage, but the cases were made for T/C Hawkens and the like anyway. The same cutting technique could be used to make a handsewn case as well.
