I was wanting to try to make a pullover shirt with a drawstring neck kind of like LaClair's. What would be the closest pattern to it?

Wayne,

I don't know about your reference to LaClair, but I just used the same 4 gusset pattern I use for my other cloth shirts, I got it out of the BOB #3 I think it was. Also I think the book Rural Pennsylvannia Clothing has a pattern in there as well.

Hope this helps somewhat

I can not find any pics of one without Mr. LaClair in it so I am not going to post a pic. Looks to be just a square cut shirt made out of a wool blanket. Cut long with a string tie neck kind of like a chemise.

I guess I should have admitted that I don't know who LaClair was.
I would think though that the square cut 4 gusset style should work, as far as I know that was pretty much "the standard" from the early 1700s to mid 1800s.
Collar and cuff styles changed but the basic shirt stayed pretty consistant.

As I said I didn't really use a pattern, just instructions out of the Book of Buckskinning, Rural Penn. Clothing has the same info, also a little book called THE HISTORY OF UNDERCLOTHES is pretty cool and has some good info on shirts, for mine I just used a Brit. surplus hospital blanket, it's white and a nice shirt weight.

You might try these guys for a pattern, make a pratice one out of an old sheet or something before you start cutting up you blanket. Good luck! http://www.kannikskorner.com/home.htm

Hi Wayne. I am sewing my first blanket shirt right now. I am using the NW Traders pattern. There are 5 pieces in this pattern: front, back, collar and two sleeves. I bought a cheap acrylic blanket at Goodwill to do this first sort of practice shirt. I have a nice wool blanket to make the final shirt. Here is a picture of the NW Traders shirt.

Good luck with your project.

El Lobo, is that pattern tailored cut at the shoulder or is it just square cut? With the square cut I was wandering if the shoulders would stand up like a linebackers instead of falling over the shoulder because of the thickness.

For patterns, check Crazy Crow, and also Dixie Gun Works. They have patterns for just about everything.

It is tailored at the shoulder. I have been too busy with the home remodel to get back to it the past couple of weeks, but I will post a photo when I get it done.

I ended up just making a drop sleeve patterned like the chemise in the French Marine sketchbook.
