It's subtle. Next to my Hawken inside it looks like the same brown. But when you hit it in the right light or in the sunlight it really looks cool.

Before I browned it it was matte grey. I used Belgian Blue and under cooked it to get the brown. It actually is kind of a bronze. I never though about not oiling it so I don't know about the finish without oil. With the oil it's a bright bronze with darker highlights.

So it's not a traditional finish at all, it's just something that looks pretty?

I guess I ask about the shine because for a target/match shooter "shiny" isn't a good thing.

Looks alright though, it's unique,

I've spent my entire adult life doing things that most people consider abnormal. I do things that I like. While my Kentucky was the easiest gun I ever put together, I like it the most.

I prefer apple cider vinegar. I also like a pattern.
Keep the barrel wet with vinegar for at least 4 hours. Can wrap it in a towel = pattern, wrap it in cotton rope = pattern or just poke it in a long piece of pipe and fill = no pattern.
Either way PLUG THE HOLES. Don't want vinegar IN the barrel.
Here is one wrapped in 1/4 cotton ropefor 4 hours:

I gotta give that a try.

I probably need a photo of someone else's results first. Talking my wife into wrapping an old rope around the barrel she put so much work into and then rusting it would be quite a chore. :)

Considering that the browning is nothing more then a coat of "dead rust" Im not sure what effect the vinegar would have on it.. Its actually pretty subtle on bare steel all things considered....
