As I am sitting at my PC right now, 3 squirrels just ran across my back fence. That is not unusual in and of itself as we have tree rats aplenty. What is odd is that they were all 3 blonde. I have never seen blonde squirrels before. I have seen black, gray, white and fox squirrels, but not blonde. Are they some kind of mutation? They are the same size as the gray squirrels that we have herds of around here...

I've seen blond grey squirrels in Sav., Ga. when I was a kid. We use to catch a lot of squirrels for pets and every now and then would get a blond one. Same color as a palomino horse. Never seen one since.

It was interesting to see not just one, but three of them. They would be neat for pets!

I knew a guy that had a squirrel for a pet. Talk about tear into everything. Also had a mean streak as I remember. I just do not make pets of wild animals.

I have seen Blonde squirrels though. They are rare around here. Also red, gray, black, and light brown. I think they are just a color variation of the fox squirrel but could be wrong there...

Your still lucky to have such things to watch..

We've got 'em here in South Carolina. I saw my first one about a year ago. Read somewhere that they're new to the area, or maybe just plain new, don't remember which. It was odd enough that it got a write up in the paper, though. I'll see if I can find it.

Scroll about half-way down this page. That your tree-rat?

Dumb Blondes is redundant...

I hit the link, that is what my mob of tree rats looks like. As I am typing, they are out on the fence again playing. They would make a pretty mount, but being in suburbia, they won't be harvested for that...

Offspring of an albino and regular color squirrel? We had an albino living on the farm, have not seen him in a few years. I have seen his blonde offspring.

We used to have a bunch of 'em around my house. Haven't seen 'em in a few years.
Now there is a pure black squirrel living down the block tho.
A farm I used to hunt @ 10 years ago had quite a few black and black/normal combo. tree rats. Shoulda got one mounted back then. The farm got bought up by rich Chicago guys and we got the boot. :cursing:

Speaking of Squirrel, here in Illinois, Albino Squirrels are protected, but that all-black squirrel is not. Anyone see something queer about that? Genetically, the two have the same chance of appearing. The same goes with Albino deer, but not all black deer. I have seen one all black doe in the woods, although just a fleeting glimpse, here in central Illinois.

I didn't know albino squirrels were protected. I did know about the deer.
Never saw a black (melanistic) deer, or an albino either for that matter.
Had a piebald doe walk right under my stand 3 seasons ago. Had the sights on her, but decided to let 'er walk. No-one else I hunt with has ever laid eyes on her. If they did, she'd be in their freezer.

Gray squirrels have at least 2 recessive types of color phases, red and black (melanistic). The red color phase looks blonde. I have 1 gray squirrel pelt that has a blonde tail only, otherwise it has the color of a regular gray squirrel.
I'm not sure if the white ones are true albinos or just another color phase.
