Just received my copy of this newly released book, Bloody Mohawk: the F&I and Rev War on New York's Frontier, by Richard Berleth. Looks to be a well compiled history and good read of the turbulent events that took place from the early 1700s through the 1790s in the Mohawk Valley and associated events in the Hudson and Champlain Valleys, as well. Just getting into the first chapters, but, so far, well written and an enticing read.

I still believe Drums along the Mohawk is a great book and would make a fine movie, I used to hunt all through the area when young. Good smoke, Ron

Yeah, the book is better than the movie, but it's still historical fiction.

I think in '39 the hollywood tendency was to rewrite the movie to suit the star, as: Henry Fonda did "Adam Helmer's run" tho it was a different character in the book. There was some good acting, though. I think if it was done today closer to the actual book, it would be a nailbiter. The author always stated that only a few of the characters were created, a lot were actual persons, based on recorded history. Good smoke, Ron

Oh sure, the characters are mostly real, but no one can prove they said, and did, the things portrayed in the book, hence historical fiction. It's a good read, though.

An update - just a chapter or two from finishing Bloody Mohawk!. This has proven to be a very well documented account of both the big and little events and battles of both the F&I and Revolutionary War events that took place in and around the Mohawk Valley of New York, in a very readable presentation - in a not too overly scholarly style! This is not a historical fiction account, in the manner of J. F. Cooper's Leatherstocking Series of books. I'd reccommend this as a candidate for a must read list for the historical/reenactor of these time periods. Enjoy!
