Since I'm a noob with my revolver , after you shoot your 6 rounds, do you ever rotate the cylinder and blow through the nipples ?

I have done this with my 54 Hawken for years, why not the revolver? Same theory right?

Hey thanks for posting that link, I think I will also give a little puff as I turn the cylinder, just makes since to me.

Naturally that's just what I thought I needed to do anyway, just wanted to see if others did.

I never thought about blowing through the nipples, but I keep a piece of wire handy, that fits through the hole. When I pull the nipple(s), to clean the gun, I blow carburter cleaner through them. The straw, of the carb cleaner, just fits into the nipple, and it blows out all of the carbon..........Robin

In over 40 years of cap and ball shooting, it never occurred to me that blowing thru the nipples was ever necessary.

The possibility of slobber accumulation may adversely affect ignition, plus it would look kinda silly if shooting at a range where others may be unfamiliar with blackpowder firearms.

I've never blown through my revolver nipples. I use caps and cap-off prior to loading OR when I invert the revolver and point it muzzle-down to brush the chambers & barrel to remove excess fouling. Shooting at a 50 yard target to earn a Distinguished Expert has taught me that maintaining some fouling, but not too much, is the key to success in keeping the hits in the black. Sometimes I'll wipe the chamber mouths will Bore Cleaner, then use a cleaning patch on a rod to clear excess fouling, so the caps dry out the nipples quite well.

Not saying that what you're doing won't work too, as there's more than one way to skin a cat in this hobby! Good luck to your endeavors!

Same as others- 40 years of cap and ball- never have blown through nipples, never had a problem. A cap and ball is different from a long barrel in either a rifle or single shot pistol. The chamber is short and all the powder burns up, no reason to do anything. The clearing of a nipple relates to a single shot where the ramming of the ball could force fouling down the bore and plug up drums, nipples, etc. Blowing or clearing nipples is not needed with the revolver.

Well I have read that sometimes revolvers do not fire affter they have been shot during the same session.

Wouldn't that be because the nipple is clogged?

I don't know since I have never shot one before. Just trying to learn the do's and don'ts .

Just blowing in the back on the cylinder through the nipples as you turn it just seems that it would give you a chance to inspect each nipple and make sure there is no metal fragments from the cap there.

After all they do have nipple pricks for clearing the hole, why not a burst of air.

Like I said before I'm a noob ,that's asking questions.

When on the line, pistols have to be carried and handled with the barrel up, safety. That means you would have to hold the pistol over your head to blow into the nipples, not sure how that would work.

I shoot five times, clean each chamber, clean the barrel and forcing cone and clean each nipple, then reload. Line matches only allow a person to load 5 chambers not 6, some folks will argue about loading all 6, I prefer only loading 5.

Do a search in the internet for "Black Powder Cap & Ball Reloading" by Gatefo of Utah. A worth while read.

I've been shooting them for 40 years and have never even heard of blowing through the nipples.
I have heard of blowing down the barrel after first making sure all the chambers are empty, a practice highly frowned on by the safety minded folks.
Never experienced the need for either practice personally.
Misfires are almost always from cap seating problems not clogged nipple ports. MD

No argument here.

Can hear "Josey" now, time out, gotta blow through my nipples.

I've been shooting C&Bs since the 70s. Never blowed through the nipples. I did see it done on a movie once and it seemed kinda lame then.
